TENDENCY OF BILINGUALISM 

 

Another significant factor determining the  development of a language spoken by a small 

number of people  is the degree of bilingualism, or rather, non-monolingualism of the speakers, 

which, of course, is a consequence of the status of this language. Thus, almost all Dutch Frisians 

and almost all  Faroese are bilingual; this also applies to the overwhelming  majority of Yiddish 

speakers in different countries. It can be argued that in the inevitable collision for the considered 

nation between the natural desire to  promote knowledge of the native  language,  in particular to 

give  children  language  training  at  school,  and  the  equally  natural  desire  to  arm  with  the 

knowledge  of  the  language,  which  opens  the  way  to  social  advancement,  the  latter  wins.  This 

phenomenon is global and characteristic of small nations in various countries. Mastering a more 

prestigious and promising language limits the scope of the native language. Exceptions are rare 

cases of conscious cultivation of "one's own"  language, as, for example,  it  is  a case with "New 

Norwegian" (by the way,  it is  native  for no one: those who use it  usually speak a dialect in the 

family).  The  degree  of  bilingualism  is  different  (and  not  so  often  one  hundred  percent  in  all 

respects).  For  example,  in  German-speaking  Switzerland,  where,  as  a  rule,  they  speak  dialects, 

and write in literary German, the average individual’s speaking skills in the literary language are 

constrained,  they  often  make  mistakes and try to avoid  it. The example of Luxembourg  is even 

more revealing. The native language of the population is Luxembourgish, or Letzeburg (German 

dialect  of  the  Moselle-Frankish  group),  and  the  official  languages  of  the  country  are  German 

(literary) and French, so all Luxembourgers, at least in theory, are trilinguals.
