If you have to speak to a group or on a stage, especially if this is going to
happen more than once, my number one piece of advice is to practice the
skill of public speaking. I’m not surprised that so many people fear the
microphone and the stage. I would be extremely nervous if asked to
bungee jump or ski a diamond run, simply because I have never done it
and I lack the experience, the knowledge, and the tricks of the trade to
make sure it will go well. The idea of it not going well is scary indeed in
both these cases!
I’ve always liked the famous comment attributed to the extraordinary
golfer Gary Player, a man of iron will and titanic discipline who was still
doing 1,300 sit ups a day at the age of 80. He holed a shot out of a
bunker, and a spectator said: “That was lucky!” Player rejoined: “The
more I practice, the luckier I get!”
Just as with any skill, the more you speak in public, the better you will be
at it, and the more confident you will feel. If this is something you need to
do in your life, take it seriously and devote some time and energy to
practicing.

There are many opportunities to do this: Toastmasters, for one. This is a
global organisation whose sole purpose is to help people develop
speaking skills; it has a process, and mentors to take you through the
various stages in their system. In any major city, you will probably fine
multiple groups you can try. Toastmasters is a superb resource, and a
great way of meeting interesting, like-minded people while you develop
your public speaking skills. My only slight quibble with the organisation
is that I find their finished product just a little too close to a performance,
where virtuosity displaces authenticity. Nevertheless, there is nothing
wrong with learning to be a virtuoso, because you can then give a talk
that’s brilliantly-delivered as well as authentic and from the heart.
If Toastmasters isn’t for you, then you could try local ‘meet up’ groups,
readily findable with a quick web search on ‘public speaking meet up’. In
many cities, there will be such groups of people who are keen to practice
public speaking among themselves – less structured than Toastmasters
but probably just as committed. Or you could rally some friends who also
want to learn public speaking, and create your own group, coaching one
another and forming a ready-made audience for regular sessions.
Practice may not make perfect, but it will absolutely create radical
improvement and bring those nerves under control, even to the point
where you can start to enjoy the whole experience. This is all even more
