употребляется с модальным глаголом can, например: 
“I thought they would never go — some people just can’t take

Eddy — you can take a hint”. — «Что мне нравится в тебе,

то вместо неопределенного артикля появляется опреде-
ленный, например: “I told him that I wanted us to be like Ro-

Как и в русском языке, эта идиома может употребляться 
иронически, а именно как ответная реакция на нечто, ска-
занное открытым текстом: 
She:
“Do me a favour. Get out of 
here!” 
He:
“All right, all right. I can take a hint. A bit subtle, but 
I can get it.” — 
Она:
«Сделай мне одолжение. Вали отсюда!» 
Он:
«Хорошо, хорошо. Я в состоянии понять намек, даже 
такой тонкий».
Вам может также понадобиться идиома drop a hint — 
«обронить намек», «намекнуть». Например: “You can’t drop 
a hint to your father?” — «Ты не могла бы намекнуть своему 
отцу?»
Эта последняя идиома часто встречается во множе-
ственном числе — drop hints: “You can drop all hints you 
like, baby. I’m not buying you a car.” — «Можешь намекать 
сколько угодно, крошка. Машину я тебе не куплю»; He’s been 
dropping hints that he’d like to be invited to the wedding. — Он
