Domestic and Foreign Trade
Domestic trade in the Kokand Khanate was based on the long-standing division 
of labor between sedentary artisans in towns and villages, and nomadic herders. 
Internal trade was conducted at the many city markets, the best of which in the 
nineteenth century was considered to be at Kokand. Every town and village had 
market day, when people from nearby places came to trade. The important markets 
at Kokand and Tashkent opened twice weekly. On those days, the Kazakhs and 
Kyrgyz brought their horses and sheep, and sedentary people brought corn, cot-
ton and silk fabrics, as well as various household products. Tashkent also was the 
main distribution point for supplying Russian goods to Kokand, Margilan, Andijan, 
Namangan, Khujand, Osh, and other cities.
Foreign trade played a major role in the economy, especially with Bukhara 
and Kashgar, but also with Khiva, Afghanistan, Iran, India, China, Turkey, and 
especially Russia. Caravan traffic with Bukhara was especially heavy in the early 
summer and late fall, and consisted mainly of plants for dyes, cotton fabrics, and 
English cheesecloth. Kokandis also benefited from such Chinese transit goods as 
tea, porcelain tablewear, and silk.
Because all trade between Kokand and Khiva had to traverse the hostile territory 
of the Emirate of Bukhara, few caravans made the trip, with trade consisting mainly 
of Khivan gowns and English printed cotton. Trade links with East Turkestan were 
much closer. The Kokand-China treaty of 1831 had given the Kokand khan the right 
to collect fees on trade in Kashgar, which reaped great profits. Among the exports from

Kokand to Kashgar were silk, paint, and especially printed cotton, while the Kokandis 
imported sal ammoniac, carpets, tea, and felt mats.
Kokand-Russian trade relations occupied an important place in the economic 
life of the khanate. For example, from 1758 to 1853 the value of Russian exports 
to Kokand increased from 174,000 to 2,171,000 rubles, while imports increased 
from 37,000 to 676,000 rubles. Russians mainly exported iron, copper, and steel 
factory products, faience, dishes, mirrors, treated and finished leather, calico, woven 
cotton, velvet, sugar, faience dishes, and mirrors. Kokand merchants brought silk 
and cotton fabrics, carpets, dried fruits, and rice to Russia. Even in the nineteenth 
century the Ferghana’s main export to Russia was cotton. On this basis, the Ko-
kand Khanate and Russia developed a mutual interest in trade, especially after the 
proprietors of Russian cotton mills discovered that the khanate could become a 
major market for their finished goods.
