READ THE PASSAGE
Ask questions about parts of the passage that you find difficult to understand.
Art for Art’s Sake
Mitch and Rahim took the bus downtown to the art museum. They had a school assignment that 
Rahim had been avoiding for days. He had never been to an art museum before, and he was not at all 
thrilled about going now. Rahim thought he would be bored and counting the minutes until they had 
enough information for their report and could leave. Mitch didn’t know much about art either but was 
excited to be doing something out of the ordinary.
Once inside the museum, the boys found out that some paintings and sculptures were on permanent 
display, and some works of art were on exhibit for only a month. The boys each grabbed a map, got out 
their notebooks, and split up to gather their research information. 
The newest traveling exhibit included Asian art and sculpture. Rahim decided to check out that exhibit 
first. After more than an hour had passed, Mitch came looking for him. He found Rahim still at the Asian 
exhibit, looking at the Japanese watercolor paintings. The misty settings looked so tranquil that Rahim had 
been mesmerized. He could not stop staring at the long, narrow paintings of those simple yet exotic 
scenes. The sculptures were even better—so peaceful and yet so exciting.
Mitch broke the spell when he spoke to Rahim. He said that he had liked the art well enough, but he 
was ready to go. Mitch had toured the entire museum and had plenty of information for the report. Rahim 
had not seen anything beyond the Asian art exhibit, and although he did not want to go, he agreed to leave 
with Mitch. As the boys walked out, Rahim asked how much longer the Asian exhibit would be on display. 
He wanted to see it again before it left town. Mitch looked at him kind of funny, but Rahim just shrugged his 
shoulders and smiled.
