Lefties
Without a doubt, this is a right-handed world. Since the majority of people, about 90%, are right-
handed, “lefties” are often left to fend for themselves. Research indicates that left-handed people tend to 
use the right hemisphere of the brain—the more creative side—more than right-handers do. This means 
lefties may be better equipped to improvise. Improvisation is a good quality for lefties to have because 
there are few tools designed with them in mind.
Historically, left-handedness has been discouraged. This was partly because of the difficulty left-
handers had writing with liquid-ink fountain pens, which were in general use until the 1850s. While using 
fountain pens, lefties would smear their writing as the left hand passed over the wet ink (even modern 
pens do not completely eliminate this problem). In addition, many tools and devices were designed to be 
used only with the right hand, which placed left-handed people at a disadvantage. Where heavy 
machinery is concerned, this has been a potentially dangerous disadvantage. Left-handers sometimes 
appear to be awkward or clumsy when forced to operate a tool with their non-dominant hand.
These days, however, left-handedness is more commonly accepted. Many items are now available 
in left-handed versions, although often at higher prices. Plus, there are some advantages to being 
left-handed. In sports, left-handers can present surprising challenges to opponents by using unexpected 
techniques. Research also suggests that a higher percentage of left-handers may have an aptitude for 
artistic endeavors.
