Ask Questions
By asking questions, readers can set a purpose for reading or make sure 
they understand what they have read. Good readers ask questions to 
involve themselves with the text and often ask questions before, during, 
and after reading.
DAY
1
Introduce the 
Ask Questions 
strategy. Explain: Good readers engage with a text they are reading
by asking questions. They can ask a question before they read to set a purpose for reading. They 
can also ask questions during and after reading to make sure they fully understand the text. Tell 
students they will be reading about the first motion pictures, or movies. Read aloud the directions 
and the first paragraph. Model the strategy: I am pausing at the end of this paragraph to ask
a question. I wonder: Did viewers think a movie about a train pulling into a station was exciting?
I will keep reading to look for the answer. Direct students to read the rest of the passage 
independently. When they have finished, have them complete the strategy practice activity with
a partner. Then direct them to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Ask Questions
strategy. Say: You can ask questions during reading to help 
you stay focused on the text. For a fiction story, you can ask questions about the plot, setting, 
characters, or theme. Have students read the instructions at the top of the page. Tell students to 
think of a question as they read the passage. Direct students to write their question in the space 
provided for the strategy practice activity. When students have finished, discuss the questions and 
answers as a group. Then direct students to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers 
together.
