Making connections to a text will 
help you to better remember and understand the information. As you read, think about how 
the passage relates to something from your own life. 
When students have finished reading
direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
4
Remind students of the 
Make Inferences
skill. Say: 
Think about information that is not directly 
stated. Is the author asking you to “read between the lines”?
Tell students they are going to read 
about NASA. Say: 
Use what you read and what you already know about the space organization 
to make inferences. 
Then remind students of the 
Organization 
strategy. Say: 
Authors can 
organize information by comparing and contrasting, listing a main idea and details, giving 
facts and opinions, or explaining causes and effects. As you read, think about which way the 
author organized the information in the passage. 
When students have finished reading, direct 
them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
5
Tell students they will practice both the 
Compare and Contrast
and 
Make Inferences
skills by 
reading a fiction story about two brothers. Remind students of the 
Make Connections 
strategy. 
Say: 
Make a text-to-world connection by thinking about how the passage relates to the world 
around you. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy 
practice activities. Review the answers together.
Compare and Contrast
Students practice comparing and contrasting by looking at the similarities 
and differences between two or more people or things.
