READ THE PASSAGE
As you read, look for similarities and differences between the two classic works.
Romeo and Juliet
 and 
West Side Story
When choreographer Jerome Robbins, composer Leonard Bernstein, and writer Arthur Laurents 
decided to create an updated version of 
Romeo and Juliet,
they had to solve the problem of how to 
modernize William Shakespeare’s play. At first, they thought about turning the two lovers’ rival families into 
a Catholic family and a Jewish family. However, as time went on, they grew interested in the idea of gangs. 
Thus, in the musical 
West Side Story,
the Polish American “Jets” and the Puerto Rican “Sharks” take the 
place of Shakespeare’s two battling families, the Montagues and the Capulets.
In 
Romeo and Juliet,
the young lovers are not supposed to fall in love because their families are rivals. 
In 
West Side Story,
most characters’ family bonds are the result of their gang friendships. Both stories 
open with a fight between the rival groups. Later, the main male character falls for the main female 
character at a party, and the girl’s family or friends disapprove. In 
Romeo and Juliet,
Romeo calls to Juliet 
while she is on her balcony after a ball. In 
West Side Story,
Tony calls to Maria while she is on her fire 
escape after a party.
Although Laurents retained many aspects of the original work, he did make some significant changes. 
For example, a key plot point of 
Romeo and Juliet
is that Juliet takes a drug that makes her appear to be 
dead. Laurents did not believe that audiences would accept that plot point in a modern setting. Therefore, 
in
 West Side Story,
Maria’s friend Anita tells the Jets that Maria has been killed. As a result, while both 
endings are tragic, the circumstances surrounding the final tragedies are worlds apart.
