TRANSLATION AND STYLISTIC PECULIARITIES OF PUN

Annotation: This article is devoted to the transmission of the stylistic 
technique of pun when translating valuable works of different authors into another 
language. The article defines this technique and discusses the main strategies and 
techniques for translating puns based on the material of literal works which are some 
of the main sources of puns, and also compares author and studio translations of literal 
texts, in particular, pun translations.

A pun is a stylistic speech revolution that is based on ambiguity, generated 
homonymy or similarity of words that may have different meanings.
n the linguistic style there is a debate about a single understanding of the 
essence of a pun, which is also manifested in terminological diversity. This technique 
is often referred to as "pun", "verbal acuity", "double meaning".
The pun is different from other types of wordplay by the presence of two 
important components: multiplicity and humorous and satirical effect.
Among the puns can be identified: the clash of homophones; consonance of 
words in a narrow context; comparison of homonyms, homographs; destruction and 
transformation of stable phrases and idioms; polysemy of a word or phrase; comic 
etymology, etc.[2,p.29]
The whole essence of a pun is in opposition or unpredictable combination of 
two diametrically opposite values in one phonetic or graphic form.
The main elements of a pun are, firstly, identical or close, to homonymy, sound, 
and secondly, the discrepancy, to antonymy, between the two meanings of words, 
components of phraseological unity.
