9. Give a Name to Difficult Emotions
Matthew  Lieberman,  PhD,  professor  of  psychology  at  the  University  of
California,  Los  Angeles,  has  found  that  when  you  name  your  emotions,  you
activate areas of the brain that help you to react less. If you help your children to
name what’s happening inside them—to say the words, “I’m feeling angry and
afraid  right  now”—their  alarm-center  response  in  their  brains  turns  down
significantly. The more you help your children to exercise this part of the brain
that names feelings, the less stressed they will be, even when stressful things are
happening to them.
Dan Siegel, MD, puts it simply: “Name it to tame it.”
If  your  child  can’t  name  what’s  happening,  try  offering  him  or  her  options.
“Are you feeling mad, or sad, or afraid?” You might even consider writing down
this question and offering multiple-choice answers. Or you might try opening the
conversation  by  imagining  how  they  are  feeling:  “What  happened  was  really
scary. Are you feeling scared?” Help your children learn to name their emotions
before they are overtaken by them.
Remind your children that the problem is not their feeling of anxiety, fear, or
anger;  the  problem  is  how  they  react  when  they  feel  overwhelmed.  By  helping
your  children  to  name  all  the  difficult  feelings,  you  help  to  keep  them  from
acting out, feeling overwhelmed, or shutting down.
