Young people becoming experts:
causes of OCD
It is helpful for patients and families to have appro-
priate information about our current knowledge of
the aetiology of OCD. Understanding that OCD is
a neurobiological disorder helps young people and
families realize it is not their fault. It is also help-
ful to stress that treatments really work, and that
many successful people have coped with OCD.
Cognitive—behavioural therapy (CBT)
Studies in adults and young people have shown
CBT to be an effective treatment for OCD, with
40% to 88% of young people achieving remission.
Studies have shown that CBT for paediatric OCD
can also be effectively delivered in groups or by
telephone [20,21,23].
