Differential diagnosis and identifying OCD
Diagnosing OCD may involve asking the child
direct questions about obsessions and compul-
sions, as these may not be revealed spontaneously.
Clinicians need to consider alternative diagnoses,
such as depression, other anxiety disorders,
developmental disorders that include repetitive
behaviours (e.g. autism spectrum disorders) and
tic disorders. Psychological instruments may be
used to assist with diagnosis and rating of severity.
The best validated is the Children’s Yale-Brown
Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) [14].
