School of Life Sciences
The predecessor of the School of Life Sciences was the Department of Biology, which was established along with the founding of Sun Yat-sen University in 1924. Many famous scholars have taught in the School, including Prof. Huanyong Chen, Zongluo Luo, Zhu Xian, Zhelong Pu and Zuoren Zhang. The School boasts not only its long tradition, but also its remarkable contribution to the development of education and research of life sciences. Based on several basic disciplines (Taconomy, Systematics and Ecology), the School has gradually expanded to include new disciplines, such as Physiology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology.
At present, the School encompasses 3 departments: Department of Biology and Technology, Department of Biochemistry and Department of Ecology. There are 15 research institutes/laboratories. In addition, the School has about 20 bases for research and education, including 2 state education bases. The School's Museum of Biology, housing over 850,000 species of exhibits collected since 1817, is one of the best biological museums amongst all universities in China.
Taking advantage of its biological resources in its tropical-zone and semi-tropical-zone, the School has made many remarkable achievements both in theories and applications on aquiculture, agriculture and ecological environment, etc. Over the last 5 years, the School has been awarded over 20 prizes at provincial and ministerial levels, and has made 180 patents applications, out of which 58 have been granted. According to some statistics, scientific productions may have created social economic benefits worth over 10 billion yuan RMB. The number of publications in SCI has increased annually; 158 papers have been published and the total number of the impacting index has reached 382.76 by the year of 2005, the highest amongst Life Sciences schools throughout China.
In recent years, the School has set up students exchange programs and academic collaboration with prestigious international universities, including Oxford University, the University of Chicago and South Denmark University. The faculties participate in numerous national and international conferences, and many famous scientists and alumni have been invited to give lectures. The School has also successfully hosted many national and international conferences and workshops, including the 5th Symposium of World's Chinese Scientists Focusing on Nutrition and Feeding of Fish and Shellfish in 2004, the 5th International Symposium on Monogenean in 2005, and a symposium on Infectious Diseases and Control in 2005. Over 20 international collaboration projects are still on going. Through national and international cooperation, the academic system and research capabilities have been greatly improved and the School enjoys a high reputation in the fields of life sciences.

Research
The School strongly encourages its faculty members to conduct top-level research and achieve significant results in both contemporary and classical subjects. To realize this goal, the faculty makes a great effort to organize research activities. There are weekly seminars on various specialized research fields that involve the participation of graduate students and faculty members. These seminars constitute an exchange and interaction of ideas. There is also a weekly faculty colloquium in which top level researchers from all over the world come to give speeches, present their mathematical thoughts, and share their insight with our faculty members. Moreover, a number of international conferences and workshops are held every year.
The main strengths of the faculty are in the following areas:
·Analysis
·Applied Mathematics
·Differential Equations
·Differential Geometry
·Logic and Algebra
·Probability and Statistics
·Numerical Analysis
The research groups interact with each other and together form the core part of the faculty. The whole team is ranked among the top mathematical research institutions in China and plays the leading role in South China. Another distinctive feature of this team is that it is one of the youngest research teams in China compared to other mathematical research schools.
Exchange and Cooperation
The School is active in both domestic and international academic exchanges and collaborations It has joint programs with the Ecole Normale Superieur and other institutes abroad Each year, a good many teachers are sent or invited to the United States, Europe, Hong Kong and other regions for academic exchanges and collaborations. The School successfully held international symposia on Computational Mathematics in 1997 and 2002 and hosted an international conference on Wavelet Analysis and Application in 1999.

Guanghua School of Stomatology
The Guanghua School of Stomatology is one of the major dental schools in China. It was first founded in 1974 as the Faculty of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen Medical College. Three years later, it became the College of Stomatology of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), and was finally renamed as the Guanghua School of Stomatology in 2001, when SUMS merged with Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Today, the School has a staff of over 400 and nearly 1000 full-time students. It undertakes clinical work, as well as teaching and research tasks, and offers a variety of programs for both undergraduates and postgraduates, and is the only school authorized for stomatology PhD programs in South China.
The Hospital of Stomatology of SYSU is one of the most prestigious and advanced dental hospitals in China. With 208 dental chairs and 66 hospital beds, it is the main hospital to undertake the School's teaching tasks and to provide excellent dental services to the community.
The Institute of Stomatological Research is located in the North Campus of SYSU. Many research projects in the fields of molecule biology, cytology and dental materials can be undertaken at the Institute. The "three-in-one" structure, which combines teaching, clinics and research together, is consistent with the advanced model in the world.
Over the past several years, the School has made significant contribution to the development of higher dental education and the advancement of dental clinical techniques in South China. The School has also made great achievements in multidisciplinary research fields. With its well-structured teaching programs and quality clinical technology, the School aspires to be one of the leading centers in dental education, research and healthcare in China.
