Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center
Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University is an advanced ophthalmic center that integrates prevention of blindness, eye care, teaching and research. It is also the first and the optimum choice for those with complicated eye diseases in China. The quality of medical service is a vital component of the Center.
In 1965, some famous ophthalmic experts, such as Professors Yaozhen Chen (Eugene Chan) and Wenshu Mao (Winifred Mao), founded the Eye Hospital. Endorsed by the Ministry of Health, the Eye Hospital was renamed "Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center" of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) in 1983. The Center originally consisted of the Eye Hospital, the Eye Research Institute and the Office for Prevention and Treatment of Blindness (Prevention Ophthalmology). In 1997, the Department of Optometry of SUMS was merged into the Center. In 2001, when SUMS and Zhongshan University were merged, the Center was given its present name: the "Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University".
ZOC, located in Guangzhou, occupies an area of 8,969㎡, with a floor space of 35,522㎡. It originated from the Eye Research Laboratory of Zhongshan Medical College established in 1953, starting with only 122 beds and later increased from 210 in 1970s to its present 320 beds. The Center receives about 450,000 outpatients and performs over 26,000 operations annually. The methods and techniques of diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases are the best in the country.
ZOC is one of the institutions that were first approved to award master's and PhD degrees. In 1989, the State Education Commission appointed the Center as a national key unit of ophthalmology. In 1990, the ophthalmic laboratory of the Ministry of Health was set up in the Center, which brought the laboratories supervision and support from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Department of Education and the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province.
Since 1995, ZOC has earned honorary titles such as the "First-Class Unit of Guangdong Province", the "100 First-Class Hospitals of Guangdong Province", the "Advanced Group of National Health System", the "Advanced Group of Norman Bethune-Style of Guangdong Province", the "Advanced Unit of Guangdong Province in Ethical Conduct", the "Advanced Group of Guangdong Province" and the "First-Class Window Unit of Guangdong Province". In addition, the Eye Hospital ranked the first "A+ Level Hospital" in 1995, and ZOC was acknowledged as the first State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology in 2005.
With half a century's endeavor, ZOC has gained remarkable achievements in medical treatment, ophthalmic education, research and the prevention of blindness, and has become one of the 20 largest general ophthalmic centers in the world.
