Department of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy was founded in 1924, when the University came into being. Quite a few famous scholars, such as Youlan Feng, Da Li, Kang Wu, Qianzhi Zhu, Fucheng Zhou, Keding Luo and Cai Ma, contributed to the growth of the Department. In 1952, the faculty split up and joined in other universities during the nation-wide reshuffle of colleges and departments. In 1960, the Department was restored. Since then, it has made a remarkable progress.
At present, the Department is one of the national bases for philosophical research and training endorsed by the Ministry of Education, and is authorized to award doctoral degrees in all branches of the philosophical disciplines. There are two "National Key Disciplines" and two "National Key Research Bases" in the higher education for humanities and social sciences. The Philosophy Major has been evaluated and authorized as the famous-brand specialty in Guangdong Province. In 2003, it ranks the fifth throughout the whole country in the Disciplines Assessment by the Ministry of
Education.
The Department has made great advance in the reform of curriculum design and teaching method in recent years. It collects a number of outstanding scholars of important influence in the realm of domestic and overseas academia, and also cultivates thousands of high-quality academic

The Department offers well-equipped working offices, multimedia-equipped lecture halls and conference rooms, and websites full of academic resources.
Achievements
In the 1st "Award for Outstanding Achievements of Philosophy & Social Science" of Guangdong Province, 3 teachers of the Department won the First Prize, another 3 won the Second Prize , and 4 won the Third Prize; the "Award for Special Academic Achievements" was also awarded to 2 professors from the Department.
The Department holds campus-range "Philosophy Week" in every November, and organizes relevant activities including academic speeches, knowledge contests, etc.
The Department won the champion of the Debate Contests on Zhuhai Campus among all departments and schools of Sun Yat-sen University in November 2005.
Exchange and Cooperation
The Department hosts academic lectures on philosophy once a week to create a strong philosophical atmosphere on campus.
The Department exchanges and collaborates with academic institutes, such as Harvard-Yenching Institute, Hong Kong Taoist College, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Institute of Sino-Christian Studies of Hong Kong, Taiwan Academia Silica, Taiwan Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan Dharma Drum College of Humanities and Social Science and so on.

School of Intellectual Property
The School of Intellectual Property is a newly established school founded on November 13th, 2005. It is an institution for intellectual property research, professional teaching and academic exchanges. The School aims to train high-level talents on Intellectual Property and to raise the research level of Intellectual Property Law. It shares the same facilities and faculties with the School of Law. The School of Intellectual Property offers Master of Law degree program and Juris Master's degree program on Intellectual Property. It is active in international cooperation and exchange, and has established academic relationship with universities and academic institutions worldwide to provide intellectual property training and joint research.

Curriculum
IBS offers a broad curriculum that embraces arts, humanities, literature, foreign languages, social sciences, and natural sciences. All students must finish the core courses and diversified elective courses in the first two-year's study, so that they will be endowed with a strong foundation and broad knowledge. In their sophomore year, students are free to choose their majors and orientations again within the school based on their strengths and interests, as well as the demand of the job market. Students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities, internships and social practices during winter and summer vacations.
Faculty
The faculty of IBS consists of a qualified and diversified group of teachers and scholars strongly committed to education and research. All faculty members have obtained doctoral degrees, and half of them have experiences of studying or teaching abroad, IBS follows current international educational practices in its teaching. World-renowned professors and well-known entrepreneurs are invited to give lectures, teach elective courses and hold seminars on related topics.
Students
The undergraduate programs of IBS enroll competitive students from within the country and abroad, and the selection is based on students' academic and personal attributes and their abilities to make contributions both inside and outside the classroom. For the last two years, average admission scores of the School are within top 5% of all tertiary institutions in Guangdong Province. The students of IBS are passionate, diligent and creative. They are offered full range of academic and professional services and given various opportunities to explore and develop themselves.
Exchanges and Cooperation
To fulfill one of the educational goals of IBS - equipping students with international visions, the School seeks to put its students in a diversified environment and promote international exchanges and cooperation. The School has so far established connections with universities and institutions in many countries including Canada, the U.S., New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Students may choose to go abroad for one-month, one-semester or two-year credit-transferable study visits. Students who choose the two-year credit-transferable study module will be awarded two degrees, one from SYSU and one from the partner university, when requirements of both institutions are fulfilled.

School of Law
The School of Law originated from the Legal Science Department of National Guangdong University, which was founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Its history could be traced to 1905 when the legal undergraduate programs were provided at Guangdong Law and Politics College and thereafter at Guangdong Legal Science University. In 1926, National Guangdong University was renamed Sun Yat-sen University, with the Legal Science Department accordingly renamed. In 1931, the Department was developed into Law School of Sun Yat-sen University and then was cancelled in 1952 due to a national disciplines adjustment. In July 1979, Sun Yat-sen University reestablished the Law Department with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In July 1993, the Department of Political Sciences and Public Administration, the Law Department, the Institute of Population and the Sociology Department constituted the School of Law and Politics. In September 2001, Sun Yat-sen University withdrew the School of Law and Politics and set up the School of Law on the basis of the original LawDepartment.

The School pays much attention to international cooperation and exchanges and is actively involved in academic collaboration with the outside world. Many famous professors, judges, prosecutors, administrative officials and lawyers at home and abroad have been invited as distinguished guest lecturers to the School.
The School has close academic links with many well-known universities, law schools and other institutions, including Law School of Yale University, College of Law of the University of Illinois, New York University, Law School of Washington University in St. Louis, Law School of the University of Wisconsin Stetson University, Vermont University, Yale-China Association in USA, London University, Lund University in Sweden, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law of the University of Queensland in Australia.
The School has successfully held many international and national conferences and enjoys high reputation among the academic circles inside and outside China.
Unique Program
The Legal Clinic of Sun Yat-sen University was established in February 2002. It has set up a cooperative relationship with New York University and got generous financial aid from the Yale-China Association, the Ford Foun- dation and the Lingnan Foundation. The Program becomes one of the great programs of international cooperation and exchanges. The Clinic's program includes both "Lecture" and "Practice", which provides students with oppor-tunities to receive professional training and to feel the real pulse of society. Guided by the principle of "Learn From Practice", students are gradually familiar with the practical skills when confronting with particular problems. During the clinic education, they foster professional ethics and sense of social responsibility to qualify themselves as legal professionals. As a result, the Clinic's excellent quality of teaching has received high reputation from the society.

School for Overseas Educational Exchange
The School for Overseas Educational Exchange (SOEE) is located on the South Campus, one of the 4 campuses of the University along the south bank of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. The picturesque campus sceneries and advanced facilities make it an ideal place for study.
The University is one of the first 10 colleges and universities in China that set up the educational institutions for teaching Chinese as a foreign language (CFL), and is also one of the first testing centers for Chinese Proficiency Test(HSK).
For more than 20 years since its establishment in 1981, the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language in SOEE (formerly the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language) has trained more than 6,000 international students ranging from Chinese language trainees to bachelor, master's and doctoral degrees students.
The School's high caliber teaching staff with rich experiences in Chinese language teaching and the outstanding education quality have won the University a prestigious position in the field of CFL teaching and training in South China and across the nation.

School of Tourism
The School of Tourism offers undergraduate programs on Zhuhai campus and graduate programs in Guangzhou. The School recruits undergraduate, MA and PhD students in hotel management, MICE management, tourism planning and destination management, leisure and sports management. The programs of the School have carefully formulated for students to obtain profound training in tourism theory and professional skills. Internships and placement in tourism bureaus, hotels, travel agencies, exhibition centers and others have been designed as part of their career preparation.
The School's research tradition addresses the cutting-edge issues concerning tourism in China. The Center for Tourism Planning & Research (CTPR) is an academic institution in the school. It is also the seat of the Commission of the Geography of Tourism, which is associated with the Geographical Society of China. The faculties have gained more than 30 research projects, 6 of which are funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China. The School has published sixteen books and more than 180 papers.
The Center for Tourism Planning & Research is also one of the nine institutions certified with Qualification of Grade A in tourism planning by the China National Tourism Administration and has completed more than 40 planning projects, including the Master Tourism Plan of Zhuhai City, the Master Tourism Plan of Guilin City, the Master Plan of Suzhou City, the Master Tourism Plan of Huangshan City, the Strategic Tourism Plan of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province. The School's aim is to provide good services to the tourist industry and to facilitate the development of tourism in China, resulting in good partnerships with industry and the government.
The School believes that international cooperation is crucial to the education of tourism. Every two years, an international academic conference is held to discuss current issues in tourism. The School has also developed exchange programs with various organizations and institutions, including the World Tourism Organization, the University of Angers, France, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Queensland University, Australia, and many others. Some well-known international scholars have given lectures and workshops to the students.

School of Translation and Interpretation
Founded in 2005, the School of Translation and Interpretation at Sun Yat-sen University was the first academic school in China to offer 4-year undergraduate programs in translation and interpretation. The School aims to provide the society with high quality bilingual and trilingual professionals in the areas of translation and interpretation, business communication and Chinese as a foreign language.
The mission of the School is to promote academic excellence that empowers students to initiate their careers or to continue their academic education in higher degrees.
The School is located at the beautiful Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. With a strong contingent of teaching staff, the School is a higher education institution that cultivates both academic studies and professional skills.
Unlike other foreign language institutions starting second foreign language courses in the third year, the School offers second foreign language courses in the second year. Students are encouraged to learn their second foreign language well and are given one extra year to achieve it. The second foreign languages include French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic and Korean (starting from the second term of Year One, and taught all by Korean native speakers).

·Translation & Interpretation
This is a 4-year program designed for students who want to be professional translators, interpreters, bilingual or trilingual elites in governments, commerce, media, etc. This program emphasizes the mastery of language skills, comprehensive translation and interpretation skills, knowledge of different cultures and other professional skills in the fields mentioned above. Care courses include Integrated English, English Grammar, English Writing, Translation, Interpreting, Modern Chinese, Introduction to Chinese Culture, British Society and Culture, American Society and Culture, European Culture, Second Foreign Language, Computer Application, etc.
·Business Communication
This 4-year program aims at training students to become bilingual or trilingual professionals who are able to meet the challenge in international business activities. With the emphasis on intensive training in English language skills, students will be provided with courses in international business, trade, finance, law and management. Students are also encouraged to take up double bachelor degree courses.
·Chinese as a Foreign Language
This 4-year program is designed to train students to be teachers of Chinese language and Chinese culture with English as a working language. Graduates can also be good tourist guides and translators for tourist organizations. The program is supported by experts from the School of International Exchanges at Sun Yat-sen University. Care subjects include Introduction to Second Language Teaching, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Chinese Culture, Chinese Proficiency Test, etc.
