Research Center of Historical Anthropology

The Research Center of Historical Anthropology was founded in October 1986 and rebuilt in January 2001, with Professor Chunsheng Chen as the present director.

Since 1980s, the historians and anthropologists in Sun Yat-sen University have been focusing on the academic tradition of their predecessors. They noticed that the bonds between the subject of historiography and many other subjects, such as anthropology, sociology and economics, are indissoluble. Historical anthropology, which focuses on the history of ordinary people's life, has been an important trend in the development of new historiography after the Second World War. It is characterized by a combination of certain methods, such as fieldwork, literature review, literature critique, participation and textual interpretation that are used in research of anthropology.
Since the establishment of the Center, the cultivation of a sense of history has been attached great importance to and regarded as a strong backbone. The Center puts great emphasis on drawing and using theories and methods from other subjects. It pays attention to the communication with scholars from international academic circle and keeps pace with the trend of international academic development. For instance, it combines researching methods both in historiography and anthropology, and records outstanding achievements in other research fields. A number of projects cooperated with overseas anthropologists and historians have been carried out, including 20 state or provincial level projects conducting in-depth research into tribal and regional culture, folk beliefs, religious cultures and the traditional countryside.
Meanwhile, scholars of the Center have paid close attention to social and economic development. Their specialized knowledge and multi-disciplinary research help them in providing inquiry reports for the state or local government in decision-making. In this way, the Center has made great contribution to China's social development. Moreover, the Center has endeavored to improve research conditions in order to effectively cultivatemore young scholars of historical anthropology. It aims to establish a newframework to interpret China's social phenomena and its history, to contributeto the development of historiography, anthropology and social sciences.
