Institute of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage

As an important research base in humanities and social sciences endorsed by the Ministry of Education,

the Institute of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage has established 3 research sections: Oral Literary Art and Folklore, Traditional Chinese Drama and Protection Strategy of Intangible Heritage. Today, the Institute has an excellent integrated research team. As a result, research studies within the Institute have flourished in fields of textual drama, modality of performance, oral literature and art, folk customs, city culture and intangible cultural heritage protection, etc.
History

In 1920's, 2 well-known scholars, Jiegang Gu and Jingwen Zhong initiated the research on oral literary art and folklore. Their studies resulted in the founding of a research institute, Oral Literary Art, in 2000, headed by Professor Chunsheng Ye, a postgraduate student of Jingwen Zhong. Since then, outstanding achievements have been made at the Institute.

In 1950's, 2 celebrated drama experts, Jisi Wang and Meikan Dong, working at the Chinese Language and Literature Department, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), laid the foundation for studies in Chinese traditional drama. As a result, the Traditional Chinese Drama Research Center was established in the early 1980’s, headed by Jisi Wang. Later in 1987, Ancient Literature (the essence of traditional Chinese drama) of SYSU was recognized as one of the nation's top educational disciplines. The Center was subsequently renamed by the University as the Institute of Traditional Chinese Drama in 1998. Over the years, research conducted at the Institute has been widely acknowledged.
In December 2002, the 3 research centers--Traditional Chinese Drama, Oral Literary Art and Intangible Heritage amalgamated to form the Institute of Chinese Traditional Drama and Immaterial Heritage. In the same year, an application made to the Ministry of Education (MOE) to establish the newly amalgamated Institute as a core research institute was endorsed. Another application was made in 2003 to the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and was approved in the same year. In order to comply with the regulations set by MOE, 2 research directions that were not relevant to the research path of the Institute were eliminated in April 2004, and the Institute was given its present name--the Institute of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage, SYSU.
Achievements

In 2002, Series of Playbooks on the Yuan Dynasty edited by Professor Jisi Wang won the first prize for Excellent Humanities and Social Science Studies.

In 2004, Study on the Chinese Ancient Theatrical Costumes and Clothes, written by Junhua Song (Associate professor), won the prize of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation. In 2005, the doctoral dissertation written by Guotao Li was nominated for the same prize. And Professor Tianji Huang, Chengxue Wu, Xaokang Gao, Yuping Peng, etc, were respectively awarded the Special Academic Success, the first and second prize for the "1st Guangdong Philosophy and Social Science Achievement".

Journal of Folklore, the academic publication published by the Institute, has been renamed as Chinese Intangible Culture Heritage and the publication was enlarged by the end of 2005. The Institute also intends to edit and publish a series of books, for example, Chinese Intangible Culture Heritage Series, Folklore Rendition Series, Literature Ecology and Tradition of the Folk Culture Series.
In recent years, the Institute has organized a series of influential academic meetings, such as the International Symposium of the Development and Stratagems of Chinese Ancient Drama, Multidimensional Vision of Cultural Research, the International Symposium of Chinese Folklore after the Era of Jingwen Zhong (Nov, 2004 in Guangzhou), the Forum on Protection and Research of Chinese Intangible Culture Heritage (May, 2005 in Beijing), the International Symposium on Chinese Traditional Opera in Conjunction with the Conference Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Professor Jisi Wang and Professor Meikan Dong (Mar, 2006 in Foshan).

Library

The Sun Yat-sen University Library was opened in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. By 1953, its collection had greatly increased due to the amalgamation of several universities including Lingnan University. The merging resulted in the multidiscipline collection of the Library. The Library was designated as one of the 16 Social Science Information Centers in China by the State Educational Commission in 1991. As one of the 8 Regional Centers of CALLS (China Academic Library and Information System) since 1998, Sun Yat-sen Unviersity Library has assumed the role of planner, organizer and coordinator of informational resources in South China. Over the past few decades, renowned academicians who have successively served as dean of the Library include Mr. Dingyou Du, Mr. Tongli Yuan, Mr. Yibai Chen and Mr. Duoyuan He, etc.

Currently, the University Library is a system of libraries, which are comprised of the main library on the South Campus in Guangzhou; the Medical Library on the North Campus in Guangzhou; two Fundamental and Reserved Libraries (one on the East Campus, another on the Zhuhai Campus) and the other 3 subject libraries. In addition, the Library contains 2,000 titles (25,000 volumes) of rare ancient books, the majority of which are block-printed editions from the Ming Dynasty, or the only existing copy in China, or valuable items or pieces with comments by famous figures of stature. It also owns 176 titles (968 volumes) of ancient Korean books, 85 titles (831 volumes) of ancient Japanese books and 35,000 pieces of stone rubbings from different dynasties, which are rarities in China. The periodicals and newspapers published in South China region during the period of late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China are large in number and rich in variety. The Library keeps well-documented collections of Guangdong gazettes, Sun Yet-sen research documents and Hong Kong and Macao research materials.

The Library has inherited its long library tradition and cherish openness, equality and sharing. "Wisdom and Service" is the library's motto. It practices open-shelf, free access and gives high-quality service. The patrons, on or off campus, enjoy services such as check-out, on-site reading, interlibrary loans, online international information retrieval, internet browsing, reference assistance, document duplication, specific entrusted information retrieval, instruction on different topics, CD-ROM or online databases search, OPAC access, etc. The Library serves as a hub in the campus network. The Information Retrieve Hall, the Electronic Reading Room and the Multimedia Instruction Room are equipped with modern facilities. The newly established Dissertation Documents Bibliography Database and the databases on educational documents, Hong Kong and Macao documents, and the Pearl River Delta Region documents have greatly assisted users. Meanwhile, the Library has always emphasized academic research in the field of library research. The published journal of the library, the National Sun Yat-sen University Library Weekly, prior to 1949, used to have an influential impact upon many academic circles throughout the country.

The Medical Library of Sun Yat-sen University has a long history of over 100 years. The staff in the Medical Science Library now offer a course entitled "Medical Literature Retrieval and Utilization" to the undergraduates, postgraduates and clinical doctors.
