School of Communication and Design

The School of Communication and Design was founded in 2003. Currently it has 3 departments, Department of Communication and Design, Department of Arts and Design, and Department of New Media and Video Production. The undergraduate programs include journalism, arts and design, which prepare students to work in careers from the communication studies to the performing of creative arts, with strong liberal arts education. The School has 28 staff members, including 3 professors, 6 associate professors and 10 lecturers.


Most of the students, who study hard and actively engage in varied social activities, are on the East Campus that locates at the north end of the Guangzhou University City in Xiaoguwei,Panyu.
As a newly established school, it has extensive cooperation and exchanges with institutions at home and abroad, including Hong Kong Baptist University, South China Morning Post, the Sunderland University of Britain, etc.

School of Education

The School of Education was established on June 7th, 2000, to meet the need of higher education development in China and the reform in Sun Yat-sen University. The School has acquired highly talented and professional academic staff, including 19 professors and 38 associate professors. Most teachers have doctoral or master's degrees; some are highly active in related

research fields.
The School provides academic programs to undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students in the disciplines of Marxism Theory and Ideology Studies, Education Economics and Management, Higher Education, Education and Psychology. The School also offers basic education courses on political science, ideology and moral education, physical education and training.
As one of the first education schools set up in a comprehensive university in China, the School aims to develop into a unique teaching and training model emphasizing on both teaching and research, integrating basic study with applied research and providing a range of degree programs. The mission of the School is to further enhance its research in ideology and moral education

as well as physical education, to make contributions to fostering and educating all-rounded high caliber professional personnel for society. The School also targets at orienting its research towards the application ends in the disciplines of education and psychology, and playing an important role in the advancement of the State's education and the social development of Guangdong Province.

School of Foreign Languages

The School of Foreign Languages was founded in 1992, based on the former Department of Foreign Languages, Guangzhou English Language Center and Center of Chinese Studies of Sun Yat-sen University. The School has a long and rigorous academic tradition. Its Department of English was established in 1924, when the University was founded. Many famous scholars such as Shen Hong, Shiqiu Liang, Liuling Dai, Zongdai Liang, Zongyan Wang, Wentong Xie, Dayin Yu, Shichun Gui, have taught in the School and exerted a tremendous influence on its development.


The School of Foreign Languages takes foreign languages and literature, applied linguistics, functional linguistics and discourse analysis, translation studies, cultural studies and international business as the main areas of teaching and research. The School is dedicated to the training of high caliber talents in foreign languages and literature, foreign affairs, foreign language education, international business, media and publishing industries as well as tourism.
The School has always been active in academic exchanges and collaborations with other prestigious universities and institutions both at home and abroad. Each year, scholars from the School are sent to English-speaking countries or Hong Kong and Macao to give lectures, conduct research, attend conferences, or to further their studies. The School also recruits a team of foreign scholars and experts.
At present, there are 4 departments under the School: Department of English, Department of Japanese, Department of French and Department of German, as well as the Guangzhou English Language Center, which offers intensive English training programs to scholars who are to study or do research abroad. The School was among the first group of institutions in China to offer PhD and Master's degree programs in English Language and Literature in the early 1980s. The English Language and Literature program of the School has also been recognized as one of the key programs in Guangdong Province.

School of Government

The School of Government was founded on 30 September, 2001. The School has successfully implemented many research programs, which have made positive impact on today's society and economy. It is currently conducting research projects funded by the National Social Science Foundation, the Natural Science Foundation and the Ministry of Education. There are totally

208 joint programs in collaboration with USA, Canada and other countries, with over 18,800,000 RMB yuan involved. Since 2001, 45 academic books, 27 textbooks and 961 articles have been published, amongst which 31 were published on international journals, 32 were on top academic journals in Chinese Social Science, Economics, Sociology and Political Studies, another 7 articles were reprinted in the Xinhua Digest. The School has been given many academic research awards; for example, Study on Ethical Politics was awarded the second prize for the Excellent Academic Achievement for Humanities and Social Science.
The School aims to provide comprehensive educational programs in accordance with local requirements, which are aligned with international standards. The School is also endeavoring to build up its national and international reputation in the field of governance.

Department of Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology is the oldest anthropology department in China. Anthropological research and teaching at Sun Yat-sen University originated from the Anthropological Research Team set up by the History and Language Research Institute in the late 1920's. The former Department of Anthropology was established in 1948, with Prof. Chengzhi Yang as the first chair. In 1951, it officially ceased to operate. The Department was reestablished in 1981, and became the only anthropological institute that offered postgraduate and undergraduate programs in China. Prof. Zhaotao Liang, the first chair of the new department, was one of the first PhD supervisors in China.


The Department is the largest and the most diverse anthropology department in China. It offers undergraduate degrees in social/cultural anthropology and archeology, MA and PhD programs in social/cultural anthropology, and MA degrees in archeology. It has 250 undergraduate and 90 graduate students, including students from Hong Kong, Macao, Japan and Vietnam. There is a full-time academic staff of 24 and also 6 part-time professors with expertise in social/cultural anthropology, linguistics, physical anthropology and archeology, including 13 professors, 11 associate professors and 6 lecturers. The staff is divided into 4 teaching groups to provide academic training in 4 sub-fields of anthropology.
Focusing on public research, the Department has several research centers: China Cross-Cultural Consulting Center, Anthropology Museum, Cultural Heritage Research Center of South China, Health and Human Development Research Center, Historical Anthropology Research Center (in collaboration with the Department of History) and Folklore Research Center (in collaboration with the Department of Chinese Language and Literature). In 2002, the Ministry of Education rated the anthropology program in the Department as the state key program.
The Department conducts summer fieldwork for undergraduate and graduate students to give them an appreciation and a better understanding of the complexities of the natural world. It also encourages its academic staff and students to participate in interdisciplinary and academic exchange within the University. The Department is active in international academic exchange with

nearly 20 universities or academic institutes from Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. It also participates in international conferences and has organized several national and international conferences. Famous experts are invited each year to give lectures at the Department.

Department of Chinese Language and Literature

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature has a long history in Sun Yat-sen University. Along with the establishment of Sun Yat-sen University, the Division of Chinese Literature was founded in 1924. In 1926 the Division of Chinese Literature changed to its present name. At that time the Department offered courses in literature, linguistics, folklore and journalism. During the national restructuring of schools and departments in 1953, the branch of linguistics moved to Peking University, and journalism to Jinan University in 1959.The Chinese Training Center later merged with the School of Foreign Languages in 1992.


There are some famous scholars in the Department, including those who taught in the early years, such as Xun Lu, Moruo Guo, Sinian Fu, Dafu Yu, Fanwu Cheng, Jiegang Gu, Jingwen Zhong, Yuanren Zhao and Changpei Luo. Other well-known scholars who have taught in more recent years include Li Wan, Qixiang Cen, Geng Rong, Chengzuo Shang, Antai Zhan, Xiaoyue Fang, Meikan Dong, Qi Wang, Haizhang Huang and Qi Lou.
The Department aims to empower its undergraduates with a solid foundation of the major, to widen their knowledge and to instill good ideological qualities on Chinese language and literature into them. Upon graduation, students are qualified in teaching at institutes of higher education or research departments, or working as senior secretaries and administrators. Over the past 70 years, graduates of the Department have gained an excellent reputation for their working performance in various fields at home and abroad.

The Department has implemented a "4-year Undergraduate Tutor System" and "Intensified Writing Training Program" in undergraduate teaching, which require the freshmen to write 100 compositions (50,000 words) in the first year, the sophomores to submit impressions of 8 books, the juniors to finish 1 academic paper and to participate in teaching practice, and the seniors to write graduation papers. Students are instructed by the tutors on their writing and learning during their school years. This plan has been implemented since 1986, and an effective result has been achieved. The teaching accomplishments of this program have also won the Department several national and provincial prizes.

Department of History

The Department of History was founded in 1924 when the University came into being. In the 1950s, the Department embraced a considerable number of historians who formerly worked in various disciplines in Lingnan University, constituting a much stronger and more innovative team among its faculties. Some renowned Chinese historians have taught in the Department, such as Sinian Fu, Jiegang Gu, Yinke Chen, Xujing Chen, Zhongmian Cen, Jie Liu and Fangzhong Liang. The academic tradition they established in their approaches to research and teaching has a profound impact on the successors.


The Department has a number of research institutes specializing in specific areas. It also runs the Memorial Hall of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and publishes two academic journals, the Journal of History and Anthropology and the Study of Art History.
In recent years, the Department has made significant progress in research projects, including Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Modern Chinese Politics, the Transformation of Institution and Knowledge Structure in Modern China, the Dunhuang Manuscripts, the History of Religion, the World Trade System and Treaty Ports, Historical Anthropology, and Regional Studies focusing on

South China.

A number of joint-projects have been co-conducted by the Department and South China Research Center at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences, the University of Hong Kong. The major results of these joint projects include the publication of the Journal of History and Anthropology, South China Research Resource Station Newsletter, and a series of books on historical anthropology are to be published bhty the Joint Publishing Co. Ltd.
