UNIQUE HEALING PROPERTIES OF 
LYCIUM RUTHENICUM

Plant based products are important sources of both food and medicine. Whether 
a plant is used as food or medicine depends on a wide range of factors, but is not 
necessarily intrinsic to its pharmacological or nutritional properties. In the last 
decades the variety of consumed crops has increased globally, especially of local 
agricultural varieties and species collected from the wild. These are becoming more 
important for human nutrition and for medicinal uses. 
Lycium ruthenicum 
Murr (black Chinese wolfberry) is a species of 
Lycium 
L. in 
the family 
Solanaceae
. This species is highly nutritious, has high medicinal value and 
is strongly adaptable. It is the main economic tree species in the Qaidam area. In 
recent years, scholars have studied mainly the nutritional components, trace elements, 
polysaccharides and pigments of 
Lycium ruthenicum 
Murr., however, little attention 
has been paid to its ecological benefits, especially its stress resistance mechanisms 
and physiological photosynthetic characteristics in response to stress. Drought and 
salt stress are complex abiotic stress factors that can cause physiological and 
biochemical photosynthetic reactions. Studies have indicated that drought and salt 
stress can reduce the photosynthetic capability of plants and these effects are related 
mainly to the degree of stress and time of action. 
L. ruthenicum
has been described in the Tibetan medical classics Jing Zhu Ben 
Cao and Si Bu Yi Dian for the treatment of heart disease, abnormal menstruation and 
menopause. It has also been described in Pharmacography of Uighur for the treatment 
of urethral and ureteral stones, tinea and furuncle, and gingival bleeding. Modern 
pharmacology research has confirmed that L. ruthenicum has many pharmaceutical 
effects such as antioxidant, anti-fatigue, immuno-enhancement, radio-resistance, and 
anti-aging effects. Its berries contain abundant anthocyanins, which are a kind of 
water-soluble natural pigment. The pigments extracted from the berries are widely 
used as natural food colorants. It is important for controlling erosion because of its 
high tolerance to salt, drought, strong winds, cold temperatures and petroleum 
contamination. Therefore, L. ruthenicum plays important roles in ethnic medicine, 
nutritional food and the restoration of desert ecosystems.
