Obtaining information for day to day living
Other way to explain we read and listen is that it helps us acquire a specific intention in our life. 
For instance, we read a road sign that we know where to go. Listening to these enables them to get 
the information substantial for day to day living to know when to board the plane, whether it is safe 
to plan a picnic etc.
For academic purpose
People listen to lectures, seminars and talks as a way of extending their knowledge. Many lan-
guage learners are tormented by texts. Sentence with longer words and complex words in some texts 
make it more difficult for language learners to understand than short and simple texts. Such shortco-
ming is certainly indicative of a lack of vocabulary.
It is important that students practice working with written text and speech here it is possible to 
argue if they miss a few words, but are able to have a common meaning to use mainly real reading 
and listening texts in the lesson. After all, when students get in touch with real language they have to 
work for understanding.
