According to (Muhammad I.R, Affandi A.R, Mohd. A.R., 2015) in Malaysia, early Islamic educational
institutions started in mosques. Later, the centres of study in Islam were started. Some of them are known as
pondok
and
madrasah
. Among the scholars who took the education agenda in Islam in Peninsular Malaysia as early as the
17th century is as Nur al-Din al-Raniri, Hamzah Fansuri and others to influence to the Malay Peninsula (Yahaya
A.B, 1983) &(Hall D.G.E, 1962). Thus, mosque institutions have various roles such as worship centres, centres of
knowledge and information, administrative, socio-economic development, as well as activities involving
communities or communities (Abdul Rahman. A, Latif A, Syahiran M.Y, Ariffin W., 2009) &(Ajmain S. 2008).
In Malaysia, the establishment of the Islamic Religious Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM) and the
State Islamic Religious Department is responsible for conducting studies conducted by mosques that were
implemented as early as the mid-1970s. According to (Abdul Halid. S, 2010), the institution has assisted in
facilitating and strengthening the mosque and
musolla
's development and worship programs, particularly those
involving other classes known as „
pengajiantakmir‟
. It also serves as a benchmark in making assessments and
strategies more effective in ensuring that tertiary education stays on track. The studies carried out include the
teachings of Islamic Faith, Islamic jurisprudence, sufism, interpretation of the Quran (
tafeer
), and
hadith
.An analysis
of the number of mosques in Malaysia in 2016, recorded a total of 6230 mosques, while the
musolla
was 16986.
This increase can be seen in 2018, showing a total of 6334 mosques, while
musolla
has 18258 (JAKIM, 2018),
parallel with the increase in population and population of Malaysia in 32382 people in 2018. However, every
mosque and
musolla
in Malaysia has different categories. It is based on the population size of a particular area
needs, conditions, and qualifications (Azree Ahmad, Asmadi M.G, Rosli H, Kamarul A.M, 2005). According to
(Ajmain S., 2008), in general, there are (6) six categories of mosques in Malaysia: national mosque, state mosque,
district jam mosque, Institution mosque,
kariah
mosque and the
musolla
who got permission for Friday prayers from
the state government.
