The angel of death in Azerbaijani and kumuk folklore-attitude
towards Azrael
The human has been longing to understand the meaning of death and to achieve immortality since the day s/he cognized himself/herself. There exist similar ideas related to death and the angel of death in the saint religious books. Most of these ideas exist in joint Turkic myths. For this reason, writers who created sagas, yir used the myths which contained the traces of thousands of years. Given it motives of death can be encountered in all folklore samples being saga, stories, bayatis and others.
The plot of tending for immortality in Azerbaijani and kumuk folklore is found as well. The very first idea that occurs to mind in regard with death is Azrael-the angel of death who frightens the human. However the attitude towards Azrael has not been unambiguous. Deli Domruls battle with Azrael in the saga “Kitabi Dede Korkut” reminds of Javat beks battle with Azrael in the yir “Javat biy”. Kazaks encounter with Azrael in “Kazaks yir” is very interesting. In his first meeting with Azrael Deli Domrul calls him for fighting and fights with him. However in the second meeting Deli Domrul sees the impossibility of avoiding death and asks for respite in order to find someone among his close ones to die for him. In the yir “Javat biy” Javat biy managed to chase Azrael and turn him out.
The plot of meeting between the hero and angel of death is grounded on the saga “Bilgamis” by Shumers. The similarity between the hero’s battle with the death of angel in the saga “Bilgamis” and Deli Domrul’s battle with Azrael in “Kitabi Dede Korkut” by Og­huzs is found as well in Javat’s battle with the angel of death in the yir “Javat biy” bu kumuks.
Though Oghuz elements dominates in the language ethnogeny of Azerbaijani turks yet it is still possible to see kipchak elements there as well and the same can be said about kumuks in whose language though kipchak elements dominate yet oghuz elements are seen as well. For this reason once diving into the folklore of Azerbaijani turks and kumuks it is impossible not to see that most of those samples come from the same root and source.
It is of high importance to realise mutual research about the folklore of peoples who share joint region, joint culture, language, religion. In this article the folklore of Azerbaijani turks and kumuks will not be researched in general whereas only one aspect of this folklore being the attitude towards Azrael-the angel of death will be researched being compared with old sources.
