Hyperbole is an exaggeration which is often used as a figurative type of speech.

• From terminological point of view, hyperbole is an exaggeration of something and it is often used in belle-letter style or in our daily life speech.

So, hyperbole is a stylistic device and id used in ones speech in order to intensify an idea or speech.

• Here are some examples:
• - she was so happy that she felt on top of the world;
• By this, it does mean that she was on the highest peak of the world. From realistic point of view that is impossible. But, by this way, a narrator wants to say that she was just very happy or delighted.

Let’s see another example:

• - He was so hungry that he could eat up a whole horse;
• Again, we know that a human stomach cannot fit a horse in so again an author tried to give some emotional exagerration in his/her narration.

- she cried and made up a lake;

• The same thing happens in this example.

Here are some interesting examples which are taken from literary books

• I had to wait in the station for ten days. An eternity… (Joseph Conrad ”The heart of darkness”)
• So, in this example, it can be understood that the main character had to wait somebody for ten days and it felt to his as an never ending process. with the help of that phrase, the author tried to make his sentence word emotional and more powerful.

- He cried so loud that it could be heard from the far away hills; (“The adventures of Pinocchio”)

• - He cried so loud that it could be heard from the far away hills; (“The adventures of Pinocchio”)
• So, in this example it is clear that a person cannot cry so loud that it can be heard from far away distance. It is physically impossible. So, with the words far away hills the author just puts some emphasis on his narration.

In conclusion, the role of hyperbole in belle-lettre style is just to make an idea more attractive and catchy to the reader;
