Three million people die prematurely due to water-borne infections; 
In India alone, more than 700,000 children under the age of 5 die from diarrhea; 
Two million people die from inhaling smoke from stoves located inside the 
home. About half of these deaths occur in India and China. The victims are mainly 
women and children from poor rural families who do not have access to clean water, 
sanitation and modern fuels for household needs. 
Natural disasters affect the lives of more than ever a large number of the 
working population. Employees of hazardous production facilities are most exposed 
to the harmful effects of the environment. 
According to the ILO estimates

about 2.3 million men and women die every 
year as a result of workplace accidents or work – related diseases-an average of
6000 people every day. Around the world, approximately 340 million industrial 
accidents and 160 million victims of occupational diseases are registered annually. 
The ILO regularly updates these data, changes in which show an increase in the 
number of accidents and deterioration of health. 
The methodologically calculated number of industrial accidents for the CIS 
countries is 11000 cases. For comparison, 5850 cases are considered registered. 
Underestimating the total number of accidents at work, including data on fatal 
accidents, gives a wrong idea about this problem. 
Statistical data on industrial accidents, including fatal ones, and occupational 
diseases, obtained by the ILO, show that: 
The greatest mortality among workers is caused by work-related diseases. 
Harmful substances alone cause 651279 deaths per year. 
In the construction industry, there is a disproportionately high level of recorded 
accidents. 
Young and older workers are the most vulnerable. The aging of the population 
in developed countries means an increase in the number of workers among the older 
generation, which requires special attention. 
The measures taken recently in our Republic are aimed at creating a system of 
preventive analysis and management of occupational risks in the country, based on an 
assessment of working conditions at each workplace in combination with an 
assessment of the health status of employees. 
To solve problems in the field of labor protection in the Republic of Uzbekistan, 
the integrated approach and close cooperation is being implemented by state 
management bodies (the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of the 
Republic of Uzbekistan), employers’ associations (the Confederation of Employers of 
Uzbekistan) and trade unions (the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan). The 
joint efforts of the state with the management bodies of state supervision and control, 
trade unions and employers were aimed at reducing the level of occupational risks,

which had a positive impact on the overall reduction in the number of employees 
employed with harmful and (or) dangerous working conditions. 
Despite some positive aspects, the processes of modernization of production 
facilities remain relevant. The situation with sanitary and technical problems at 
industrial enterprises practically does not change. There are still an insufficient 
number of sanitary facilities in the production areas of small business facilities, where 
there are also problems with the provision of special clothing and shoes for workers. 
At the same time, an analysis of the working conditions of workers in the 
Republic of Uzbekistan shows that the total number of people working in harmful 
working conditions is steadily decreasing and was recorded in 2016 at the level of 
150928 against 149600 in 2020, this is 9 % lower. 
The number of women working in harmful working conditions has practically 
not changed and remained at the level of 13 %

Such data are associated, on the one hand, with the high degree of depreciation 
of fixed assets of organizations, on the other hand, with the structure of economic 
activities of the Republic, which is dominated by activities objectively related to the 
presence of dangerous and harmful production factors (mining, metallurgical 
industry, chemical and petrochemical industries, agricultural complex, etc.). 
In the matters of labor protection, special attention of trade unions is paid to 
ensuring the prevention of industrial accidents and occupational diseases, and also 
causes concern of trade unions about the state of occupational safety and health.
For this purpose, only over the past period, trade union organizations have 
studied the state of labor protection in 15 thousand 769 enterprises, 9 thousand
185 submissions have been made to employers on cases of violations of labor 
protection rules, 85 % of the existing shortcomings have been eliminated. Collective 
agreements have also been included and more than 927 thousand 750 labor protection 
measures have been implemented, aimed at preventing industrial accidents and 
occupational diseases, improving the working conditions of employees. For this 
purpose, employers spent 449 billion 532 million 572 thousand 695 UZS.
