Neil Seldman
was co-founder (in 1974) and is President of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in 
Washington, DC. His expertise is in recycling and economic development. For over 30 years he has 
helped start and expand small businesses that generate little or no waste. Currently, he is focused on 
zero waste industrial parks, deconstruction and recovery of building materials which have a dramatic 
impact on global climate change, and local training and employment. Neil trained in the history 
of ideas and was a university lecturer in political science. He has also been a manufacturer in New 
York City, where he was born.
Sharon Stacy
, BSc, began as an adventure tour operator before moving into teaching environmental 
studies. It was a natural transition from there to the development and trial of the Ecotour Curriculum 
for the Australian tourism industry. Married to a fifth-generation sheep and cattle producer, she is 
privileged to look across five generations of land management and apply the informal daily lessons 
of primary production towards understanding sustainability. She came to understand that primary 
producers could not bear the burden alone. This was when she began to look at the secondary sector 
and the role it can play in establishing a sustainable economy.
Yael Stav 
has an interdisciplinary background in computer science and design. Her studio, Invivo 
Design, focuses on the integration of living plants into household and office products. As director 
of design in the Plantware initiative, she is responsible for the design and prototyping of products 
made of living trees using unique horticultural techniques. Her current research, at the Queensland 
University of Technology, involves Living Walls and their potential to increase urban environment 
sustainability, as well as the integration of computer-based tools in the building-integrated vegetation 
design process.

Biographies of Contributors
Ian Swain
has completed an MSc in environmental science at the Australian National University, 
focusing on sustainable planning and design. His other qualifications include a graduate diploma 
in resource and environmental management and BA and BSc degrees. His main interest is in the 
application of ecological principles to the understanding and improvement of human–environmental 
systems. He has experience in both government organizations and private environmental consulting 
firms, as well as with various local land-management and conservation groups. Ian is currently 
teaching research skills and information literacy at the ANU.
