These days, more and more young people are choosing to study in other countries

Some universities now offer their courses on the internet so that people can study online.


Is this a positive or negative development?

With the advent of technological advancements and various global problems like pandemic, it has been normal to see many universities delivering their lessons online. While there are several drawbacks to this new approach, I belive that internet-based learning is much more advantageous.


There are some disadvantages to this trend, one of which is linked to the quality of lessons. When students are offered online courses, they miss out on the opportunity of interactive learning environment. In other words, they usually rely on written forms of communication rather than direct interaction, thereby failing to progress with peer support, competition, and exchange of ideas. Online university courses may also prevent students from interacting with their teachers, which can reduce the general quality of learning ultimately. Whereas students on traditional university courses can find out their mistakes through the interactive environment, people who take part in online lessons do not have such a great opportunity. The longer this type of learning/teaching exists, the more academic problems might occur.


Nevertheless, online higher education is a positve development in general for some reasons. First, the cost of a university education is markedly reduced when students are supposed to take courses at home instead of taking transport or eating out. This, in turn, may be even more beneficial for those who struggle financially. Second, online learning is very convenient, meaning that people can economise a great deal of time and energy staying at home. In effect, this can allow young people to take care of their family members, thereby bonding and fostering mutual relationships in the family. Finally, this kind of learning can enable students to develop their self-discipline and confidence as they do not study under the constant supervision of their teachers as usual. Thus, even though the internet-based education seems to cause serious repercussions, its economic and personal benefits are much greater.


In summary, while I recognise the detrimental effects of online university courses, I generally view them as a desirable development for their financial and personal positives.
