Use of technology – the whiteboard as a learning tool 

Most English classes have an interactive whiteboard (IWB) these days. IWBs have 

a  number  of  special  features.  Anything  a  teacher  or  student  writes  down  can  be 

saved  or  printed  because  the  board  is,  in  effect,  a  large  computer  monitor.  The 

advantages for us English teachers are that we can prepare lessons in advance and 

then display our lessons on a whiteboard. More advantages are as follows:

• No student needs to ask you what a word means because he/ she cannot read your 

writing. Students asking me to read my writing was a blight in my early years as a 

teacher. My handwriting became progressively illegible as I wrote on! 

• You do not need to write on a board with your back turned on the class. Even if 

you type, your computer can be to the side, so that you have one eye on your class. 

•  You  are  able  to  show  computer-generated  images  and  use  programs  such  as 

PowerPoint™  and  Flash  Player.  You  have  the  ability  to  access  the  internet  and 

project web pages for the class. 

• Students can present their class talks, using images projected onto the whiteboard 

to enhance their talks. 

• I find that use of the whiteboard stimulates student interest in a lesson. Highly 

attractive presentations on a subject are possible, using a combination of text and 

pictures.  For  example,  I  gave  a  presentation  of  Victorian  England  using  pictures 

and texts from a variety of sources. I then followed this up by reading from Charles 

Dickens’ Great Expectations. I was also able to show clips from a number of films 

of  Great  Expectations,  which  meant  that  the  class  and  I  could  have  meaningful 

discussions  about  different  directors’  interpretations.  I  have  also  done  this  with 

Romeo and Juliet.

•  If  students  are  allowed  to  access  Google,  they  can  find  information  on  most 

relevant topics. However, it is a good idea to check that they are always on task by 

expecting a certain amount of work in a certain period of time! 

• I am sure that students who type their work hand in better work. 

• Student participation can include interactive quizzes and close activities. Students 

feel empowered and confident if they can come to the front and become proactive. 

Other students can suggest corrections and improvement to answers written by the 

class or class members. Boys particularly thrive on this type of competition.
