It  is  possible  to  write  a  report  about  a  student  that  could  have  come  from  almost 

any  department.  If  you  covered  up  the  top  of  some  reports  and  obliterated  the 

words ‘English department’ could you tell who had sent the report? Below is an 

example of such a report:

Ellis  has  done  quite  well  this  term.  He  achieved  a  good  result  in  his  end  of  term 

test but he still needs to improve in some areas. When I first became a teacher, a 

fellow teacher had written ‘Fair’ on a report. The headmaster took him to one side 

and told him that he must write more about that particular student. He wrote ‘Only 

fair’. We have, thankfully, come a long way since then. However, the above report 

tells  us  very  little  about  the  student!  Many  reports  are  electronically  generated 

these days, but the English department should have a say as to how report systems 

are constructed. It is a good idea for English reports to be split into various sections
