Volume  and  clarity:  make  sure  that  your  audience  can  hear  every  word.  Check 

that you speak clearly and not too fast. (5 marks) 

Delivery: check that you look at your audience and alter your tone of voice when 

appropriate.  Bring  in  pictures  or  use  PowerPoint™  to  enhance  your  work.  (5 

marks) 

There are, of course, various ways of assessing these activities and different 

departments  have  different  marking  policies.  The  point  is,  whatever  method  you 

use, do  make  sure  that  the  students  know  what  they  are  being  assessed  on.  Once 

they do understand the assessment process, their learning will be enhanced because 

they will know what to aim at. 

Effective feedback in terms of marking, with clear targets for improvement 

is  essential.  This  process  allows  the  students  to  progress  because  they  have  their 

targets. It also makes you think about the assessment process – what are you giving 

this  lesson  for?  What  are  your  aims  and  objectives?  What  did  you  expect  the 

students  to  achieve  and  how  far  did  their  work  outcome  match  up  to  your 

expectations? With GCSE, AS and A-level students, I believe it is essential to give 

them all a copy of the course syllabus and the assessment criteria.

inspired  English  teaching  best  grade  possible.  It  is  all  written  down  in  the 

syllabus! I then talk to individual students to show them how they can improve. It 

is  also  desirable  to  write  full  comments  at  the  end  of  their  essays.  An  example 

might be: This work shows promise, Connor. However, in this essay you needed to 

mention  all  the  factors  that  contributed  to  the  death  of  Romeo  and  Juliet.  Also, 

please  use  short  quotes  to  back-up  your  interesting  ideas.  Connor  is  able  to  see 

what he needs to do to gain a higher grade. He can also find two targets from the 

comments: 

1. Mention all relevant facts. 

2. Use short supporting quotes. 

The  following  essay  that  Connor  writes  on,  say,  To  Kill  a  Mocking  Bird,  will 

mention all the relevant points and he will back-up each point using a short quote. 

Should he fail to do this, he will be reminded about the two targets that he wrote 

down!
