31 GETTING TO GRIPS WITH SCHOOL ISSUES

A  phone  call  to  parents  is  generally  useful,  as  it  shows  the  misbehaving  student 

and the parent that you, as a teacher, care about the student’s behaviour and his/her 

future  progress  in  English.  Serious  sanctions,  which  form  part  of  the  school 

discipline  procedure,  are  part  of  senior  management  policy.  The  sanctions  vary  a 

great  deal  from  school  to  school.  However,  an  English  department  can  create  its 

own  ethos  by  the  following  –  and  I  apologize  for  repetition,  but  I  feel  it  is  so 

important to establish an effective ethos: 

•  Setting  work  that  is  creative,  interesting  and  at  the  right  level  for  the  age  and 

ability of the student.

• Having an assessment policy in place that involves the student and is understood 

by the student. 

• Focusing on a seating plan that will effectively reduce the scope for misbehavior 

within the classroom. 

•  Encouraging  students  to  produce  work  for  display  purposes,  which  shows  off 

student work. 

•  Sharing  lesson  objectives  with  the  students  and  reinforcing  learning  through 

plenary sessions. 

• Setting up an effective and efficient homework routine. 

• Using whiteboard technology. 

• Making all students aware of teacher expectations and rules. 

•  Making  all  students  aware  of  rewards  and  punishments,  then  sticking  to  the 

procedures. 

Should a small number of students fail to respond, then you will need to call 

on the head of English as your first port of call. An effective English department is 

one  where  there  is  a  sense  of  collective  responsibility.  The  student  concerned 

should  be  given  an  appropriate  sanction.  I  gave  English  department  detentions, 

where English department work was set. Then I made the student write an apology 

to  the  English  teacher, I  kept  a  copy  on  file. Finally, I  made  the  student  verbally 

apologize  to  the  member  of  my  department.  If  any  student  still  misbehaves  then, 

after liaison  with the  appropriate head  of year, parents should be  contacted  and a 

meeting  should  be  arranged  between  the  parent(s), head  of  English,  head  of  year 

and the classroom teacher. The threat of this sort of action is often enough to halt 

bad  behaviour.  Department  reports  are  another  effective  way  of  solving  any 

misbehaviour. At the end of each English lesson, the student has to take a signed 

card  to  the  head  of  English. Should  the  head  of  English  not approve  of  the  mark 

gained by the student, then the student is asked to undertake a short detention at a 

time convenient to the head of English. If the report is ‘forgotten’ or ‘lost’ then the 

student receives a short detention.
