Speeches to Ensure Goodwill. Goodwill is an intangible asset that is made up of the favor or reputation of an individual or organization. Speeches of goodwill are often given in an attempt to get audience members to view the person or organization more favorably. Although speeches of goodwill are persuasive, they try not to be obvious about the persuasive intent. They are often delivered as information-giving speeches that focus on an individual or organization’s positive attributes.
Speeches for Commencements. The second type of inspirational speech is the speech of commencement, which is designed to recognize and celebrate the achievements of a graduating class. Nearly all of us have sat through commencement speeches at some point in our lives. Perhaps you just finished high school and earned your degree, or you recently attended a commencement for a sibling or other family member. If you have not yet attended a commencement ceremony, you will soon as you work toward earning your college degree. Numerous celebrities and politicians have been asked to deliver commencement speeches at colleges and universities. One famous commencement speech was given by famed Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling at Harvard University in 2008.
Motivational Speaking. The second common form of keynote speaking is motivational speaking. A motivational speech is designed not only to make an audience experience emotional arousal (fear, sadness, joy, excitement) but also to motivate the audience to do something with that emotional arousal. Whereas a traditional persuasive speech may attempt to influence listeners to purchase a product or agree with an ideology, a motivational speech helps to inspire people in a broader fashion, often without a clearly articulated end result in mind. As such, motivational speaking is a highly specialized form of persuasive speaking commonly delivered in schools, businesses, or religious, club, and group contexts. The Toastmasters International Guide to Successful Speaking lists four types of motivational speeches: hero, survivor, religious, and success (Slutsky & Aun, 1997).
The hero speech is a motivational speech given by someone who is considered a hero in society (e.g. military speakers, political figures, and professional athletes). Just type “motivational speech” into YouTube and you’ll find many motivational speeches given by individuals who can be considered heroes or role models.
2. Demonstrative speaking. If you are in the technology field, or any field where processes are part of your work – demonstrative speaking is a skill you will want to cultivate. Demonstrative speaking is simply put – explaining how to do something.
Strong communication skills are key to being able to explain how to do something to someone else. For example, remember back in college when you finally understood that difficult concept? And you were able to explain it to your study group in a way that they could understand? That was you giving a demonstrative speech. Being able to explain how something works or an idea is key to career success. At work, you may be called upon do a demonstrative speech as part of a team training or product demo. A Demonstrative Speech is one in which you will demonstrate to your audience how to do something. It is easiest to decide on a topic if you start with a verb, such as: How to Do something. A demonstration speech is a form of informative speech where the speaker's primary purpose is to teach the audience how to complete a task (or process), and this is largely accomplished by demonstrating the task (or process) through a series of steps. Demonstrative speeches can be as short as six minutes (‘How to do origami’) or go on for more than two hours (‘How to start an online business’)! So choose a topic depending on the amount of time you have been allotted. You need to broaden your topic to something such as ‘5 unique egg dishes you can teach your kids to make’.
Know Your Audience. This is the most important point. While you may love your speech topic, it’s not necessary that your audience even cares for it. I’ve seen speakers who deliver passionate speeches about topics that they are experts in. But if the audience is not going to benefit from that topic, how does it make sense to deliver a speech on it? For instance, I once had a Toastmaster demonstration speech to deliver. The average age group of the club was around 35+. My ‘how-to’ topic was ‘How to live cost-efficiently as a college student’. Needless to say, although my speech content was strong, it made no difference to the crowd – because it simply did not apply to them.
Knowing your audience can even help you narrow down your speech topic into a specific niche. For example, if you’re delivering a talk to a bunch of advertising professionals, a speech on the foundations of advertising won’t make sense, right? Even though it’s in the same domain, your audience is already familiar with the basics. Maybe you can talk about something more specific such as ‘How to make copywriting effective through the use of behavioral science’. Now that’s a topic that would peak their interest as it’s relevant to their domain as well as not broad enough so as to bore them or appear too generic.
3. Informative speaking. If you’ve ever attended a Monday morning meeting, chances are you’ve heard an informative speech. Informative speeches are those that simply give vital company-wide or team information. An informative speech is the transferring of data and information from one person to a group.
Informative speaking is often in a meeting form and being able to lead it is important because:
Facilitate Conversations – Being able to facilitate a productive conversation will set you apart and help build your authority.
Build Credibility – For the most part, people don’t enjoy being in meetings. They believe it is a waste of time. If you are able to hold a productive meeting, you will build your credibility.
Cultivate Leadership Skills – Part of giving an informative speech is understanding how to keep the focus on the information at hand. Keeping everyone in the meeting on track, navigating side conversations, knowing when to step it are all part of leadership.
Almost all C-level execs have strong informative speaking skills. Their jobs require it. Being able to communicate and lead a meeting will help you advance your career.
4. Persuasive speaking. Persuasive speaking is speaking with the goal in mind to convince your audience of your idea or point of view. Persuasive speaking usually includes emotional elements and strong language. A persuasive speech can be used to get an investor to invest in your company. Persuasive speeches can also be used to help you sell your idea to your team. In fact, you can also use a persuasive speech to speak to your boss about getting a raise. Persuasive speaking isn’t always about being in front of a large audience. Persuasive speeches use many different communication skills to create the greatest impact. Implementing these communication skills will elevate your speech:
Tone of Voice – Your tone of voice will make a huge impact on your persuasive speech. It will also inform your audience on how they should feel while listening.
Body Language – Your hand gestures, eye contact, and posture are tools you can use to improve your persuasive speech. Your body language helps set the tone and can draw the listener in.
Crafting Your Message – When giving a persuasive speech, you’ll want to make sure that you take time to craft your message.
Start off with the most interesting part;
Tailor your message to your audience;
Think about what your audience wants to hear.
Whether you want to get that raise or you’re lobbying for a promotion – knowing how to give an effective persuasive speech will give you an edge.
