12143. Mr. Earl Cadue passed away at the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Phoenix, Arizona. He was 24 years of age and died January 5, 1923. He suffered three years with pulmonary tuberculosis. He leaves to mourn his numerous friends and relatives and he also leaves a wife, one sister and one brother. He was laid to rest at Catholic cemetery at Hoyt. The Holton Recorder, January 18, 1923.

12145. Holton friends received a message this week of the death of Mrs. Margaret J. Penn, January 5, at her home in Spokane, Wash. Mrs. Penn had been a widow for 32 years, having been the wife of a Methodist minister. The Penn family will be remembered by many of the old settlers of Jackson county, as Rev. Penn was pastor of the Circleville and Banner M. E. church 40 years ago. … survived by her son, Dr. George T. Penn of Spokane, and another son, Charles V. Penn of ElMonte, Calif. 12149. William Edgar Gray was born October 22, 1895, at Dawson, Nebr. He was married July 19, 1920, to Miss Ellen Armstrong, of Muscotah, Kan. He passed away January 19, 1923, at Kirksville, Mo., where he had gone in the hope of finding help to regain his health. At the time of his death he was 27 years, 3 months and 28 days of age. At the age, of five years he moved with his parents to Whiting, Kansas, where he spent his childhood and early manhood. When the call to the colors came in 1917, he volunteered his services and was one of the first to answer his county’s call. He joined Company B 2nd Kansas Infantry, National Guards, and became corporal in the non-commissioned ranks. He was honorably discharged April 14, 1919, with this official remark” “service, honest and faithful.” Some of the engagements in which he took part “over there’: St Mihiel, Argonne, Westerling sector. He came thorough these without a wound only to perish after coming home, a victim of gas poison from meat used while in the service. He was a member of the I. I. O. F. of Wetmore, Kansas, of the M. W. A. of Wetmore, and of the American Legion of Holton, Kansas. He was the son of Chas. L. and Mary E. Holland Gray of Whiting, Kansas. He leaves to mourn him, his wife, Mrs. Ellen (Armstrong) Gray, his father, Chas. L. Gray, one brother, Harry D. 12150. John Flynn was born in county Waterford, Ireland, and came to America in his boyhood years. He was united in marriage to Ellen Shannahan of Chicago and sometime after their marriage came to Kansas and settled on a farm near Huron, Atchison county. In later years they moved to the farm, one-half mile west of Mayetta, where they lived twenty-five years. About seventeen years ago they moved to Chicago, Ill., where he lived until the time of his death. He died on January 16 at the home in Chicago at the age of almost 78 years. The funeral was held on the 18th and interment took place in the parish cemetery of the Catholic church of which he was a member. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Flynn, three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Michael Flynn of Holton and William Flynn of Mayetta; one sister, Mrs. Bridget Powers of Co. Waterford, Ireland; also by his widow, two sons, Patrick Flynn of Chicago and William Flynn of Michigan; four daughters, Mrs. Catherine Campbell of Oregon, Mrs. Anna Wilson of New York and Misses Mary and Margaret Flynn of Chicago, and a very large number of other relatives. …The Holton Recorder, January 25, 1923.

12151. Eva Sorrick, daughter of Peter and Mary Sorrick, was born near Williamsburg, Blair county, Pa., September 17, 1833. She was baptized in infancy and united with the Lutheran church in her youth and remained a member thereof until about 19 years ago when she with her husband who had always been a faithful member of the Reformed church in Pennsylvania, joined the Reformed church at Holton. … On December 29, 1853, she was united in marriage with William Garner, with whom she lived until about nine year ago. He then preceded her in death, a period of wedded life of over 60 years. The Garner family is one of the oldest family’s in western Pennsylvania, Nicholas Fouse’s, arriving in Baltimore, Md., October, 1784, after being on the Atlantic ocean for fully five months. He settled in what was then the frontier, western Pennsylvania. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Garner were born 12 children, five sons and seven daughters, two sons and two daughters preceding her in death. The surviving members of the family are: Mrs. Julia Ann Ackers, Mrs. Catherine Sanders, Mrs. Mary Jane Satterfield, Miss Elizabeth A. Garner, Mrs. Sarah Alice Schirmer and Harry M. Garner, all of Holton, Wm. H. Garner of Eureka, Greenwood Co., Kansas, and Elmer D. Garner of Midvale, Idaho. Besides these are 25 grandchildren of whom 19 are living, and 3 great grandchildren of whom 2 are living. She also has a brother, Solomon Sorrick, living at Altoona, Pa. The deceased came to Kansas in March of the year 1878. They first located at Americus City, Nemaha county, where they lived about 26 years. About 19 years ago they moved to Liberty township, Jackson county, Kansas, about 1-1/2 miles northwest of Holton. … three years ago she moved to Holton to the home where she passed away. 12152. Hortense Cogan was born in Johnstown, Pa., April 30, 1836, and departed this life in Whiting, Kan., January 21, 1923, her age at death being 86 years, 8 months and 21 days. She was married to F. M. Green near Kennekuk, Kan., February 6, 1868. They lived in this part of Kansas all their married life. Mr. Green passed to his reward December 3, 1909. Mrs. Green had lived in Whiting fifty-one years. To this union were born six children, as follows: an infant girl who lived only a few hours; Frank J. Green, Louise J. Hoad, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Nellie M. Symms, Olive Hortense Green and Beatrice Evans Brogan, all of Whiting. Frank departed this life December 3, 1920. William Green of Onaga, Kan., is a son of Mr. Green by a former marriage. He shared, with the other children, the love and respect of the home. He has a daughter who is married and is the mother of a babe, making Mrs. Green a great-grandmother. There are eleven other grandchildren. Mrs. Green was converted in youth and united with the Presbyterian church. In 1858 she was sent as a missionary from the Presbyterian church at Johnstown, Pa., to the Kickapoo Indians. This mission was located on the present site of “Horton Heights.” She continued in this work until the government took the work over. Interment was in the Spring Hill cemetery. 12153. Margaret Mellissa, the second daughter of Horace and Sarah Bemont, was born near Stanford, Lincoln county, Kan., May 12, 1831 where she spent her childhood days. She was married to Granville Eaden August 30, 1855. To this union were born six children. Mary died at the age of seven years and Hadie died January 19, 1921. She with her husband moved to Camden Point, Mo., in the spring of 1857, where they lived until 1861, when they came to Jackson County where they have resided with the exception of a few years which were spent in Missouri. In November, 1886, she and her husband united with the Christian church here as charter members … Grandma as she was best known through the community, has been in failing health for a number of years. About fifteen months ago she came to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Robinson where she had the tenderest care until she fell asleep at 8 o’clock Sunday morning, January 7, 1923, aged 91 years, 7 months, 26 days. Besides her aged companion she leaves to mourn her death: John R. Eaden of Almena, Kan.; Mrs. Emma Robinson and C. G. Eaden of Circleville, Kan., Mrs. Jessie Manley of Dearfield, Kan., and thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren … she was the last of her father’s family to go. …. Mrs. J. R. Eden, wife of J. R. Eden, died of apoplexy at her home at Almena, Kan., Friday, February 2. Mrs. Eden was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Israel McComas. Her sisters, Miss Kate McComas, Mrs. Geo. Allen, her only brother, M. N. McComas of Topeka attended the funeral Sunday. The Holton Recorder, February 8, 1923.

James Noel McGregor, youngest child of Wallace M. and Mary Frances McGregor was born at Denison, Kansas, October 19, 1904; died in Hutchinson, Kansas, January 13, 1923, at the age of 18 years, 2 months and 25 days. He has gone to join his brother Willie who died in infancy and his sister Gladys who preceded him by only a few years. 12156. Mrs. Mary Wamego was born in Atchison county in 1861 and died at St. Margaret’s hospital, Kansas City, Mo., Monday January 15, after an illness of three years. Mrs. Wamego has been confined to her bed since June and was taken to the hospital in December 15, with the hopes of benefiting her. She was married on June 15, 1880 to Joe Wamego of Atchison county. To this union twelve children were born, six of whom have preceded the mother in death. The remaining children are Harry Wamego, Oklahoma; Thos. J. Wamego, Yale, Okla.; Mrs. Rose Moore, of near Mayetta; Eli, at Haskell; Mrs. Fannie Pappan, Newkirk, Okla.; and George at home … Mr. and Mrs. Wamego moved to the farm 5 miles northwest of Holton, a number of years ago … interment was in the Shipshe cemetery. 12157. Funeral services for W. H. Reasoner, 66, who died Saturday night at his home 625 Taylor street were held at the residence. Burial in Topeka cemetery. - Topeka Capital. Mr. Reasoner is a brother-in-law of Mrs. Joe Hersh of Holton, and several years ago made his home here, where he had charge of a barber shop on the east side of the square. Mary Margaret Meyer was born February 19, 1840, at Hanover, Germany, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Rairdon, in Havensville, Kansas, January 24, 1923, aged 82 years, 11 months and 5 days. She came to this country in 1846. To them nine children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Those who survive her are Mrs. Jane Senner, of Whiting; Mrs. Annie Kroth, of Winfield; Mrs. Emma Rairdon, Fred and Arthur, of Havensville; John and Edd, of Soldier. Mrs. Venneberg joined the Methodist church when a young girl … She was left a widow thirteen years ago and since that time she has made her home with her children, the last two years she has been most of the time at the home of her son, E. Latitia Linton was born near Pittsburg Penn., October 26, 1840, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lew Decker, near Circleville, Kansas, January 16, 1923, aged 82 years 2 months and 10 days. Her early girlhood was spent with her parents, Alexander and Martha Linton, near Pittsburg, Penn. She was one of a family of seven children. With the exception of a brother in Denver, Colorado, all have preceded her in death. She attended Westmorland Academy in Westmoreland, Penn., afterward teaching for several years. She was married to John Conley in 1868, later coming to Kansas. To this union were born five children, two of them, Martha Jane and Lorena, and her husband having passed away several years ago. She leaves to mourn her departure one son, James A. Conley of Eskridge, Kansas, and two daughters, Mrs. Lew Decker of Circleville, Kan., and Mrs. Cliff Doss of Holton, Kan., also six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Conley was a devout Christian having united with the Covenanter church in early girlhood … her former homes at Eskridge and Denison … Interment was made in the cemetery at Denison. 12161. Mary Hawley was born in Logan, Hocking county, Ohio, August 7, 1840. At an early age she was converted and united with the Methodist church … she was married to W. M. Oaks December 11, 1859. She with her husband came to Holton in 1868, which was her home continuously until after her husband’s death. About 9 years ago, on account of her eyesight being totally blind, she went into the Mother Bickerdyke Hospital, Ellsworth, Kan., and was cared for until August when she was taken to Ft. Dodge, where she passed away January 26, 1923, at the age of 82 years, 7 months 19 days. Auntie Oaks, as she was familiarly called, had no children of her own, but was a mother to one whom they educated and reared to womanhood, now Mrs. Gordon Miller, of Sapulpa, Okla. Mrs. Oaks had but one sister, Mrs. Maynard who preceded her in death some 14 years ago, leaving her two nieces the only relatives who survive her. The Holton Recorder, February 1, 1923.
12162. Wilburn Ernest Neeley, eleven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Neeley, passed away at the family home east of town Monday night following only one day’s illness with spinal meningitis. The little lad was taken ill Sunday evening with the dreaded disease and the end came Monday night near midnight. … Interment was in Hillcrest cemetery. Besides the father and mother there are four sisters and four brothers to survive him, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral. The Misses Alice and Margaret Neeley came from Wall Walla, Washington, where they are attending Whitman college and John Neeley, Jr., was here from Portland, Oregon. … Weiser (Idaho) Signal. 12163. The family of Harry Oursler and Mrs. Edna Taylor have all been sick with the flu, except Harry. Miss Jennie Cole was engaged as nurse and she also contracted the disease. The little son, Worth, died Saturday. The funeral was held from the Catholic church in Holton on Monday, interment in the Circleville cemetery. … Mrs. Oursler and Mary Frances were taken to Topeka to a hospital Sunday. Tilman Worth Andrew Oursler, the elder child of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Oursler died on last Saturday afternoon at his home in Circleville. Worth was but nine years of age and attended the local school in Circleville. It was on his 9th birthday, January 24, that he was present for school for the last time. 12171. Jacob U. Wise was born in Winona, Ill., April 1, 1863. While yet but a boy he came with his parents to Winfield, Iowa, where they resided until he grew to manhood and then he came to Kansas with a brother. Here he was married to Miss Emma P. Wise, Reserve, Kansas. They made their home for several years near Independence, Kansas. In the year 1895 they moved to near Centralia, Kansas, where they made their home for nearly twenty years. To this union were born three children, two sisters, Donna who died in infancy and Maude who passed to the better land at the age of 23 years; and one son, George R., who is the only surviving member of the family. His mother departed this land in the year 1911. In the year 1913 Mr. Wise was married to Libby Holsapple of Centralia, Kansas. Four years ago they moved to Holton, Kansas, where they have since made their home. For a number of years a member of the Presbyterian church but later became united with the Methodist church … besides Mrs. Wise and son George, Mr. Wise leaves four step-children. 12172. Holton friends were shocked at the report of the sudden death of Howard C. Leonard at his home in Girard, Kan., last Friday afternoon. Death followed a sudden and violent attack of influenza, developing late into pneumonia in both lungs. His illness dated only from the Monday previous. Funeral services were held at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Leonard, in Girard on Sunday afternoon, and burial was in Girard. On receipt of the news of his illness, Misses Annie and Daise Moore left for Girard but they did not reach there until after their brother-in-law’s death. Scott R. Moore went down Saturday night for the funeral. Howard C. Leonard was 42 years old. While a student at the Kansas University he met Miss Cora Moore of Holton and their marriage followed graduation. Their children are Howard, 16, and Annette 15, who with their mother survive. Mr. Leonard was a prominent business man of Girard, having been engaged in the lumber business, and lately was vice-president of the First National Bank of Girard and interested with his father in oil production.
