Mrs. Mary Gibson and daughter, Mrs. Viola Sickles, returned to their home Saturday after a short visit with relatives, being called here by the sickness and death of the granddaughters and nieces. Lenora Ellen and Louella Mae, the twin daughters of James and Maude Sharrai, was born January 11, 1923, and on February 13 they took a cold which resulted in their deaths. Little Lenora Ellen died February 13. 12207. William T. Rouse was born March 9, 1868, at Shelbyville, Ill. While yet a boy he moved with the rest of the family to Lamar, Missouri. He was converted while yet a young man and united with the Methodist church … He was married August 20, 1890, to Miss Florence Amelia Fox. They moved to Holton, Kansas, 24 years ago and have made their home here since. … three weeks ago he was taken down with influenza, from which he soon recovered and went back to work but was taken worse again and taken to Christ’s hospital in Topeka, where he underwent an operation. … on Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock he passed from us. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Mrs. Florence Rouse and their six children: Mrs. Bertha E. Cox, of Galt, Ia., Mrs. Edith M. Thompson of Hoyt, Kan., Mrs. Cora E. Stingley, of Circleville, Kan., Miss Minnie L. Rouse, at home, Mrs. Jennie M. Thompson of Topeka, Kan., and seven grandchildren, besides three sisters, Mrs. Adah Guffy of Hoyt, Kan., Mrs. Belle Rickey, Florence, Colo., Mrs. Edith Campbell of Whiting, Kan., and one brother, Chas. Edward of Edgewater, Colo., besides other relatives and a host of friends, three brothers and one sister having preceded him to the better land. He was 54 years, 11 months, and 9 days of age. 12208. Ellen Biggs Douglas was born in Kentucky August 16, 1832, and departed this life March 1, 1923, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Pifer, at Ontario, aged 90 years 6 months and 12 days. She was married to E. F. Douglas, October 2, 1859, and to this union were born 10 children, six of whom survive her. They were all present at her funeral. Her husband died June 26, 1909, they having lived together 50 years. They came to Kansas in 1866, and did their part in building up a new country. She united with the United Brethren church in her early life … She leaves 4 sons, 2 daughters, 24 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren …

12209. Circleville. Last Saturday Mrs. Lillian Estee and James Blackford received the sad news of the death in a hospital at Fullerton, Calif., of their brother, Louis E. Blackford. His death came as the result of an accident February 21. While returning from Fullerton to his home at Corona on his motorcycle when he collided with a truck. His left foot was broken, his skull crushed and a number of smaller injuries sustained. … blood poisoning set in and death came Saturday, March 3. Mr. Blackford was well known at Holton and Circleville having enlisted in the Spanish-American war in the 22nd regiment from Holton. The Holton Recorder, March 8, 1923.

12212. Mrs. Lavina Mullin, 80, died Monday at her home in Topeka. Pneumonia and the shock of the death of her son, A. B. Mullin which occurred last week caused her death. O. S. Mullin of Uniontown, Pa., formerly of Holton, is a son. The Holton Signal, March 8, 1923.
12213. Fred Ukele, father of S. F. Ukele, died at his home in Sabetha, March 1, aged 82 years. He was a large landowner of Nemaha county, was a Union veteran of the Civil War and cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln on the great battlefield of Lookout Mountain. … The Holton Recorder, March 8, 1923.
Fred Ukele, pioneer of Berwick township and a veteran of the Civil War, died Thursday, March 2 at his home in Sabetha. Mr. Ukele came to Kansas in 1869, working as a farm hand at $25 per month. He then brought 160 acres of prairie land in Berwick township. He had cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Mr. Ukele was twice married. To the first marriage two sons were born: Edward, farming the home place near Sabetha; and Sylvan, engaged in the insurance business in Kansas City. To his second marriage a daughter, Frances, now six years of age, was born. His widow, daughter, sons and two grandchildren survive him. … Seneca Courier-Tribune. Mr. Ukele’s son, S. F. 12214. Charles A. Horn, 68 years of age, who has been a resident of Topeka for forty-one years died Saturday morning at this home 221 Lake street. He was a native of Trenton, N. J., and came to Kansas when a youth, settling at Holton. He was engaged in the lumber business there until 1881, when he moved to Topeka. He served as a trainman for the Santa Fe railroad until 1907, when he retired on account of ill health. He was a member of the Order of Railroad Conductors. He is survived by two sons, Walter L. Horn of Kansas City, Mo., and James H. Horn of Argentine, Ks., one daughter, Mrs. Charlotte D. Clark, of Topeka and two brothers, Lewis L. Horn of Fort Worth, Tex., and George Horn of Kansas City, Mo. - Topeka State Journal. The Holton Signal, March 9, 1922.

12217. Last Evening’s dispatches told of the suicide of Charles F. Cramer at his Washington home yesterday. He was formerly counsel for the Veteran’s Bureau and was a wealthy man. He was the husband of Miss Lila Davis, formerly of Holton. Mr. Cramer’s death was caused by shooting himself. The Holton Recorder, March 15, 1923.
12218. Archibald M. Butts was born April 25, 1844, in Pulaskie Co., Kentucky, and died at his home near St. Clere, March 9, 1923, aged 78 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was married to Miss Mary C. Seal, September 2, 1877, and to this union were born seven children, three of whom preceded him, while four survive as follows: Alma Stevens, Laura Wifan, Oklahoma, John W. Butts, Arkansas, Archibald B. Butts. He was converted and joined the Baptist church when about 21 years of age … He came to Kansas in 1872 and located in the southeast part of Jackson county, where he lived until 1884 when he with his family moved to the present home. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, two sons and two daughters, nine grandchildren, besides one brother in Missouri. … the remains were taken to the St. Clere cemetery for interment. … The Holton Recorder, March 15, 1923.
12219. Marjorie Faye, the only daughter of Amos and Minnie M. Roby Kauffman, was born on the Ruby farm west of Holton, Kan., on April 14, 1919, and died in the same home February 28, 1923, aged three years, ten months and 14 days. She leaves two brothers, Earl Roby, aged five years, and De Wayne, aged one and a half years, together with her parents and many relatives … Her sickness was of short duration as that dreaded disease, scarlet fever, calls hastily from play to paradise. … Interment was at Holton cemetery. 12221. Word was received in Holton this week of the death of Mrs. A. H. Reichley, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Her husband is the owner of the Sutherland hotel in Holton. The Holton Signal, March 15, 1923.
12222. Cynthia Ann Blue was born November 22, 1839, near Washington Court House, Ohio. The most of her early life was spent in Indiana. In the later sixties she came to Kansas with her father Membrance M. Blue, who died in 1886. In 1869, she was married to Napoleon B. Ferguson, to whom she was a faithful companion until January, 1918, when she was bereft of him through death. To this union there were born three children, all of whom survive. They are Wm. C. Ferguson, Mrs. Allie McQuillan and Louis Ferguson, all of Holton. Also there is one granddaughter, Lois Baughman of Horton, and several nieces and nephews. … Her end came peacefully Wednesday morning, March 7, having reached the age of 83 years, 3 months and 13 days. … the body was accompanied to Holton cemetery where it was laid to rest by the side of that of the husband. The relatives from out of town who were present at the funeral were, Mrs. Wm. Kelly, Atchison; Mr. and Mrs. E. L. McQuillin, Falls City, Nebr.; Mrs. Anita Erskine, Topeka. 12223. Denison. Mrs. Mary O’Neal received the sad news of the death of her sister Tuesday morning of last week. She left Tuesday afternoon for Iowa to attend the funeral. The Holton Recorder, March 15, 1923.
12224. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Holliday attended the funeral of Mr. Holliday’s aunt at Neuchatel last Wednesday. The Soldier Clipper, March 21, 1923.
12225. Marion W. Brown, farmer of Soldier township, was found dead in his home yesterday morning. Circumstances indicated he died peacefully of heart failure as he was found lying on a couch, without signs of a struggle. Death is thought to have occurred four or five days before the body was discovered. Mrs. Brown, wife of the deceased, lives in Holton. The children are Hugh Brown, Mrs. Arthur Campbell and Mrs. John Pitsche. Mr. Brown lived by himself on the Soldier township farm. Mr. Brown was seen in Soldier last Friday. On Sunday the son-in-law, Arthur Campbell, called at the farm, but finding the door locked, supposed Mr. Brown was in Holton. Chares Backman was at the Brown farm yesterday morning and looking through a window saw the body on a couch. Calling a neighbor, he forced an entrance. Coroner Gabel was called and his opinion was the man had expired while asleep. The body was brought to Holton. Mr. and Mrs. Brown had planned to live on the farm the coming season. Marion W. Brown was born on a farm eight miles west of the city of Zanesville, Ohio, in Hopewell township on the 19th day of February, 1863. He was the youngest son of Hugh Brown and Caroline Brown, both of whom are long since deceased. His father and mother were both married twice. On his father’s side there were Caroline Fairbank, Mary Watson, Catherine Francis and Jane Dove, half sisters, all of whom are deceased. On his mother’s side there were William Ferguson, Mary Hunt and Jennie Thompson, half brothers and sisters, all of whom are deceased. There were born of the fruit of the marriage of Hugh Brown and Caroline Brown, three sons, George Brown, who resides in the city Zanesville, Ohio, and who is present today, John Brown who resides on the home farm in Hopewell township, Muskingum county, Ohio, who could not be present, and the deceased. The deceased was married in the city of Zanesville, Ohio, to Anna Lawrence, January 20, 1886, and they immediately came to Kansas and located on a farm two miles south of Soldier, Kansas, where they resided until the spring of the year 1915. They have resided in Holton since the year 1915, but have alternated between their home in Holton and their farm, dividing their time between the two … Of the marriage between the deceased and Anna Lawrence, the wife, there were born one son, Hugh Brown, of the home, and three daughters, Erma Brown Campbell, who resides seven miles north of Holton, Ollie Brown, who died in infancy, and Jessie Brown Pitsche, who resides two and one-half miles southeast of Holton.

12226. South Whiting. The community was shocked last Saturday evening on learning of an accident to little Howard Small, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Small, who until recently lived in our neighborhood, but now living near Horton. The child was struck by a passing automobile while playing in front of a neighbors house. He was hurried to the Horton hospital where he died four hours later. Howard was a bright, loveable child, five years old. … The Holton Recorder, March 22, 1923.

Alexander Patch was born in Missouri, July 10, 1860 and when but a boy met with that sad misfortune of losing his father and mother and as an orphan found his way to Jackson county, Kansas, and for some years shared the hospitality of the home of Percival Gruber. On October 28, 1888, he was married to Katherine Lutz to which union were born six children, Albert E., Laura B. Sawyer, Lily Smith, Alva and Roy. One daughter Sadie, passed away when but five years of age. Mr. Patch was employed in Goff, where he had his home for many years … held membership in the Odd Fellows for some years. A few weeks ago he began to complain with an affliction of the stomach and was taken to St. Marys hospital … The Holton Signal, March 22, 1923.

12230. Benjamin Harrison McCart, eldest son of Edgar and Rose McCart, was born March 16, 1905, near Circleville, Kansas and departed this life March 9, 1923, at his home, 1218 N. Fillmore St., Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 17 years, 11 months and 21 days. Most of his childhood and boyhood days were spent near Circleville and Holton. A few months ago he moved with his parents to Topeka. He was never strong and was unable to attend school regularly, but it was hoped that as he grew older he would overcome the weakness. He contracted tuberculosis a few months ago … He leaves to mourn his early departure, his father and mother, his brothers and sisters, John, Rebecca Jane, Ruby, Eugene, June and Robert Aldon, his grandmother, Mrs. Rebecca McCart, and many other relatives. … a cousin, George Beard … laid to rest in the Rochester cemetery, Topeka, Kan. 12231. Jesse Linsacum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Linsacum, was born in Page county, Iowa, November 2, 1882. He came to Kansas with his parents at the age of four years and has spent most of his life in this state. He moved to Delia in 1913 where on October 1, 1916, he was united in marriage to Stacia McClain. To this union was born one child, Vinita Givendohen. He had four brothers and two sisters, four half-brothers and two half-sisters. His father preceded him to the world beyond Sept. 26, 1913. He went to Colorado in 1920 for his health but to no avail and returned to Delia three months ago … He professed faith in Christ but never united with any church. … he belonged to the Masonic Blue Lodge and to the Knights Templar. He died March 18, 1923, aged 40 years 4 months and 16 days. The funeral was conducted from the Adrian church … The burial service was conducted by the Masons. 12234. Nocks Creek. Kee-me, Grandmother of John Wezo, died Friday evening at Wezo‘s and was buried Sunday. The Holton Signal, March 22, 1923.
12235. C. Frandsen died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Mead, in Kansas City. Mr. Frandsen was one of the early settlers of Whiting community first making his home with his family north west of town. After leaving the farm, he resided in Whiting until poor health made it necessary for him to have additional care, he went to live with his daughter in Kansas City. The remains arrived here Wednesday noon, and was taken directly to the Spring Hill cemetery, where the burial was in the family lot. Jackson Lodge I. O. O. F. of which Mr. Frandsen was a member, had charge of the ceremony. Whiting Journal, March 23, 1923.

Hardy Charles Coffindaffer, son of Julius and Florence Coffindaffer, was born in Platte county, Missouri, Sept. 24, 1889, and died at his home near Holton, Kansas, March 16, 1923, aged 33 years. Hardy was the oldest of seven children, five of whom are still living, one an infant brother having preceded him many years ago. The living brothers and sisters are: Ivan and Gaylord of Holton, Mrs. Goldie Armstrong of Shidler, Okla., Mrs. Sylvia Walsh of Holton, Mrs. Ina Fairbanks of Soldier, Kan. When Hardy was small his parents moved from Missouri to Jackson county, Kansas, and most of his life was spent in and around Circleville until his marriage with Miss Rose Nugent, March 7, 1916. Since then he has resided near Mayetta, Kan. To this union were born four children, Margaret Mary 6, Joseph Anthony 4, Rita Florence 2, and Hardy Charles Jr., 3 months. … his illness of over two years … the tie between the mother, who had administered so tenderly unto him during his long illness, and the son, is one of the beautiful memories of life. … He was laid to rest in the Catholic Mount Calvary cemetery on March 19, 1923. 12237. Robert Marion Shurley was born December 4, 1876, in Camock, Georgia, and died at his home in ElDorado, Kansas, March 26, 1923. In 1900 he came to Horton to work for the Rock Island rail road. In 1908 he was married to Miss Abbie Berridge. For one year after marriage they lived in Tucumcari, New Mexico, and for the last five years he has made his home in ElDorado. For one year he worked with the Express company and for the last four years he was with the Midland Refining company. … Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his departure one brother, H. S. Shurley of Florence, Georgia, and two sisters, Miss May and Miss Carry Shurley, both of Augusta, Georgia, besides a host of other relatives … The funeral service was held at the home of Mrs. S. 12238. Sarah Jane Organ was born August 1, 1844, Peru, Indiana, and departed this life at her home in Bancroft, Kan., March 10, 1923, aged 78 years, seven months and nine days. She came with her parents to Kansas in 1867, and located near Ontario. She lived in this community the remainder of her life. In 1869, she was married to James Organ. This union was so soon broken by the death of her husband which occurred 40 years ago, leaving her a widowed mother with five children, three boys and two girls, the eldest of which was 13 years of age. … Her children, James F. Alexander, Daisy and Mrs. Hattie Karns, survive her to mourn their loss of a faithful mother, William Harrison having passed from life in 1907. Alexander and Daisy have always lived with their mother doing all in their power to comfort and cheer her and make her a happy home. Mrs. Karns and J. have always lived near … joined the church in 1872.
