12517. Word has been received here of the sudden death of A. Scott Bledsoe, former pastor of the Christian church twelve years ago, at his home in Santa Cruz, Cal. Mr. and Mrs. Bledsoe were both of pioneer families here and were interested in spiritualism, having both been readers of that faith up till the time of Mr. Bledsoe’s death. He is survived by his widow and one son, who are in California now. Mrs. Abbie Burnside who has been visiting here at the home of Mrs. Maude Hill received a telegram Friday of the death of her brother-in-law and left immediately for California. - Concordia Press. Rev. Bledsoe was pastor of the Christian church in Holton in 1891 and will be remembered by many of our readers. The Holton Signal, December 13, 1923.
12518. Sophie Lohmeyer was born in Uchte, Germany, October 15, 1842, and died in Whiting, Kansas, December 7, 1923, aged 81 years, one month, and 22 days. She was christened in infancy and confirmed at the age of fourteen in the German Lutheran Church in her home town. She was married to Henry Frederick Niehaus, May 21, 1870. The same year they moved to America, locating in Chicago, later moving to Clayton, Iowa for one year. In 1876 they moved to Kansas residing on the old home place one mile north of Whiting, until four years ago; since then she has lived in Whiting. No children were born to this union, but they adopted our fellow townsman, Henry Niehaus at the age of eight months, and gave him all the loving care of an own child. Her husband died October 6, 1915, but she leaves to mourn her departure: Henry Niehaus and wife, four grand-children, Henry O., Fredinan, Lillian and Raymond Niehaus, and two great grand-children, Verna Fay and Mary Harriet Niehaus. 12520. Artibanus Wilson was born in Harrison county, West Virginia, February 17, 1858. Died at this home in Holton, Kansas, December 13, 1923, aged 65 years, __ months 16 days. He was married January 1891 to Mary Delia Friel and the same year came to Kansas where he has since resided. His wife, two daughters, Virginia Alice and Mabel Gay, now Mrs. W. W. West, of Lone Elm, one grandson, Billy West, one sister and two brothers survive him. He was a member of the Christian church … He was a Mason more than 25 years and Master of Soldier Lodge for 11 years. … for many years the family resided in Soldier leaving here some years ago for Emporia and later locating in Holton. … The Soldier Clipper, December 19, 1923.

12521. Delia, Kan., Dec. 14. - (Special) - Mrs. A. D. Moore, 75, a resident of this vicinity for 50 years, was burned to death about 4 o’clock this afternoon while preparing the evening meal for her aged husband and herself. Mrs. Moore had been partially paralyzed for a number of years, and it is believed that her clothes had caught fire from the stove and she died before she was able to call help. Mr. Moore was in the barn lot doing some chores at the time. When he entered the house he saw the smoke and went to the kitchen, where he found his wife dead. Neighbors were summoned and they put out the fire in the house. The property suffered little damage. - Topeka Capital.
Martha E. Hanna, daughter of Samuel Cook Hanna and Susan Miles Hanna, was born June 30, 1842 at Spring Mills, Penn., and departed this life December 14, 1923. Age 81 years, 5 months and 14 days. She was the seventh of a family of ten children. Her school days were spent at Meadville, Penn., where she was a graduate of Allegheny College. She with her family moved to Illinois where she taught school for eight years, to help her widowed mother care for her large family. On February 15, 1866, she was married to Albert R. Moore. To this union were born seven children, two dying in infancy. They migrated to Kansas in the early spring of 1883, settling on the prairie then, one and one-half miles from Delia. … ten years ago she was stricken with a stroke of paralysis from which she never entirely recovered. … those left to mourn her loss are her grief stricken husband with whom she had lived fifty-seven years. Two sons, Cyrus H. Moore and Burton S. Moore of Delia, three daughters, Mrs. E. A. Worthing of Belvue, Kansas, Mrs. J. B. 12522. James Henry Heathman, a former resident of Circleville, passed away December 11, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. Renberger in Havensville. He was born in Indiana, February 13, 1854. November 22, 1874 he was married to Eliza Bronson at Circleville, Kansas. Eight children were born to this union. He moved Circleville to Harveyville in 1893. In 1904 he moved to Morris county, Kansas, and from there to La Harpe, Kansas, in 1922, where he resided until three weeks before his death. He united with the Christian church in 1887 … He is survived by his wife, Eliza Heathman, one brother, Frank, of Washington, three sisters, Mrs. Gertie Kidney of Rosedale, Kansas, Mrs. Lulu Payne of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Anna McAllister of Holton; three daughters, Mrs. Etta Renberger of Havensville, Mrs. Nora Hinrichs of Randolph, Kansas, and Mrs. Mabel Burrell of Los Angeles, California; two sons, Fred L. and Lloyd E. Heathman of La Harpe, Kansas; eighteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many other relatives … Interment was made in the Havensville cemetery. The Holton Recorder, December 20, 1923.

Word reached the city Sunday morning of the death of Luren Ivan Fisher, a former well known Burbank citizen, but who has been making his home more recently at Arcadia, where death occurred Sunday at 6:30 and resulted from heart trouble. He was ill about ten weeks. He leaves a wife, and a young son, Dean Fisher. Mr. Fisher was a former resident of Burbank, having been engaged in the real estate business while here. He left the city about two years ago and has been living at Arcadia. He was born in Ohio and just passed his 51st birthday. He had lived in California about 4 years. He was a prominent member of the Elks lodge and the Elks of Glendale will have charge of the funeral. Mr. Fisher was an acquaintance of the Thompson families, having been a fellow citizen of W. Ora Palm Gustafson was born April 6, 1873, on the Gustafson homestead, five miles southwest of Wetmore, and died Tuesday, December 4, 1923, at the age of 50 years, seven months and 28 days, the cause of death being apoplexy. He leaves to mourn his death two brothers and three sisters: Frederick M. Gustafson of Wetmore, Nathaniel E. Gustafson of Denver, Colorado; Miss Edith Gusafson of Holton, Kansas, Mrs. Hilda Brenkert of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Adelia Olson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. … He was a member of the Wetmore Odd Fellows and Masonic orders … Wetmore Spectator. 12525. William Herman Klusmire was born at Holton, Kansas, June 4, 1893. It was here that he grew to young manhood and here that he received his early school training. About ten years ago he went to Texas and entered the employ of the Southern Pacific Railway Co., and remained in the company’s service until September, 1917, when he responded to the call of his country, enlisting as mechanic in Battery D, 340th Field Artillery. He was trained at Camp Funston, January 2, 1918. He was made locomotive engineer and was transferred to the Provisional Battalion, Co. H, 12th Railway Engineers. In February, 1918, he was sent with his company to France. He won special distention for bravery. On returning in 1918, he received his honorable discharge and urged by the spirit of ambition, entered the University of California, when he pursued a special course in mechanical engineering. Following this, he re-entered the railways service … It was on December the 4th, while running the Sunset Limited, between Tucson and El Paso, that his engine collided with the rear end of a freight train. In this accident he sustained an injury which resulted in his death. He passed away, December 6, in the hospital at El Paso. … His untimely departure is mourned by his father, Wm. Klusmire, Omaha, and by two brothers and four sisters. They are: Mrs. May Taylor, Hoyt, Kan.; Mrs. Carrie Ryan, New Castle, Nebr.; John Klusmire, Oakland, Cal.; Dr. Frank Klusmire, Omaha; Mrs. Pearl Bidwell, Kansas City, Mo.; Miss Gladys Klusmire, Oakland, Cal. His mother and one sister preceded him in death. 12529. Mrs. Edwin Locke, widow of the late Rev. Edwin Locke, local minister, died at her home 822 Buchannan street last night after an illness that started last July. The Rev. Mr. Locke was former pastor of the Euclid Avenue Methodist church. He also was presiding elder of the Methodist church in the Topeka district for several years. He died five years ago. Mrs. Locke is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rachel Shortt and Miss Ruth Locke of Topeka. 12530. Charles Robinson Fleming was born in the year 1849 at Frederickstown, Mo. He came to Kansas in an early day and settled at Netawaka, where he lived for a period of forty years, and where he was well known. Seven years ago he came to Holton and resided here until the time of his death. April 26, 1885, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Phillips. To this union there were born four children: Charles R. Fleming, Spokane, Wash.; Ferne Fleming, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Halcyon Bumpus, Kansas City, Mo. One child, John Paul, died in infancy. In addition to his widow and three children he is survived by a brother, O. J. Fleming, Enid, Oklahoma; and a sister, Mrs. Grace Cruthers, Oakland, California. Fifteen years ago he became a Christian and united with the Methodist Church at Netawaka. 12531. Wm. Edgar McDonald was born January 29, 1872, near Blackburn, Labette County, Mo., and departed this life December 20, 1923, at his home in Topeka, Kansas, Age 51 years, 10 months, 22 days. February 15, 1899, he united in marriage to Addie Lee Sewell, who preceded him in death March 22, 1920. To this union were born four children, one dying in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Jessie Pruitt of Potter, Kansas, and Edith and Lester of Topeka. Besides the children he leaves to mourn his departure, an aged mother, Mrs. Mary McDonald, Denison, Kansas; one brother, Hugh McDonald, Fort Morgan, Colo.; four sisters, Mrs. Carrie Record, Telluride, Colo., Mrs. Pearl Grimes, Everest, Kans., Mrs. Bertha Braum and Mrs. Hattie Dodson of Denison … he became a Christian, uniting with the Advent Christian Church in 1912 … laid to rest in the Denison cemetery. …

12532. Charles Conklin was born September 17th, 1896 at Whiting, Kansas. He was a graduate of the Whiting High School at the age of 18 years and at the age of 21 years he was admitted to the Kansas State Bar, May 24th, 1918. June 1st he enlisted for Overseas Service and on August 12th landed at Brest, France. He was immediately appointed instructor in the Ordinance Armament School in St. John Demote where he served during his term in France. January 18th he sailed for Newport News where he landed Feb. 2nd and was discharged from the service at Fort Riley Feb. 20th, 1919. He was then employed in the City Bank of Kansas City, Missouri, for one year; going from there to Minneapolis for three years where he was employed in the Federal Reserve Bank. Since that time he has been employed as manager of an office for the Reliable Loan and Investment Company of K. C. and St. Paul. He came from St. Paul, Minn. to Rochester on November 24th to spend the day with his mother before she would leave for home. He was taken seriously sick on Sunday afternoon … taken to the Colonial Hospital as an emergency case of Ruptured Appendix. … He passed away … in Colonial Hospital, Rochester, Minn., his Mother and Brother being present with him. He was 27 years, 3 months, 4 days of age at the time of his death and leaves to mourn his untimely death. Edward Conklin was born at Whiting, Kan., September 12, 1896, and died at Rochester, Minn., December 21, 1923. … mustered out February 20, 1919. … was the manager of a manufacturing concern in Chicago. He had been called to Minneapolis, Minn., to see his mother who was in the Mayo hospital and while there became suddenly ill and was operated on November 25 for appendicitis. … on December 21 he gave up his fight. 12533. Mary Alice Rodgers, was born in Indiana Sept. 9, 1845 departed this life at Whiting Kansas Dec. 22-1923, at the age of 78 years, 3 month and 14 days. When a small child she moved with her parents to Dayton Ohio and in a short time later she moved again to Clark Co. Illinois where she grew to womanhood. On Sept. 22 1872 she was united in marriage to Thoma Berridge also of Clark Co. who departed this life in May 1906. To this union were born seven children. Two having died in Infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Elbert Crawford in August 1920. When quite young she was baptized in the United Brethren Church at Martinsville, Ill. … she leaves to mourn her loss, four children, Harry Berridge of Holton; Mrs. Ida Plummer of Whiting; Grace and Tom still at home; also eight grand-children and brother, Mr. Geo. Rodgers of Martinsville, Ill., besides a number of other relatives … The burial was in Spring Hill cemetery. Whiting Journal, December 28, 1923.

12534. Bernice Gertrude Nichols was born December 20, 1901, near America City, Kansas. Died at Green, Kansas, December 19, 1918, aged 16 years, 11 months and 29 days. She had gone with her husband to Green to assist in caring for his brother’s family who were stricken with influenza. While there she was taken with the disease and survived only a few days. She was converted when 10 years of age uniting with the U. B. church. Afterward she untied with the Christian church at Havensville … She was united in marriage to Cassel Pitcher, November 29, 1917, and lived in Havensville. She leaves the husband, father, mother, two sisters, three brothers. A short service was held at the home of John Pitcher near the cemetery after which the body was laid to rest …
Cassel D. Pitcher was born November 29, 1898. Died at Green, Kansas, December 24, 1918, aged 20 years and 25 days. He and his wife had gone to Green to assist in caring for his brother and family … he was taken down with the disease and lived but a few days. Only six days before, the wife had passed … united with the Havensville Christian church some two years since .
