Cotton fibres and their properties
Each cotton fibre is a very interesting mass of cellulose and formed by the interplay of natural forces so diverse that the physical form of each fibre differs subtly from that of its neighbors in the same cotton boll. Yet all cotton fibres have a family relationship. Thus closely resembles a length of twisted ribbon having thickened edges. Every two or three twists, the direction of these twists reverses so that they occur in groups alternatively right and left handed.
Fibrils are exceptionally fine and tenuous so some the sand of them go to make up a single cotton fibre. It is this complex structure which gives each cotton fibre great tensile strength and resistance to repeated flexing and wear.
The cellulose of which a cotton fibre is made in very similar to the cellulose which is found in many other natural products such as wood, linen and the harder parts of most plant stalks and leaves. In the cotton fibre it is associated with a number of other substances, notably waxes, pectin products and mineral substances.
In order to identify the major fibres, it is necessary to understand their separate properties. The value of any fibre appears to depend largely upon the extent to which it possesses certain properties or qualities. Some of the most important properties to the considered are tensile strength, elasticity, fineness, cohesiveness and sufficient length.
They are known to facilitate the process of spinning the fibres into yarn. We want fibres also to have some degree of porosity in order to permit the absorption of bleaching and dyeing liquids. These various properties are studied in the following order:
