What is diferent about online study? 19 
invested in online delivery technology, they are reluctant to give it 
up entirely. For many university students, a blended approach or a 
fipped classroom is going to be the norm. However, suppose your 
modules are entirely online with no blended or fipped approach. 
In that case, you will need to consider carefully how you will limit 
the disadvantages of online learning. Te rest of this book will 
provide you with several ideas about how to do that. 
PRACTICAL TIPS

Make a plan.
Because online learning can be so personal and 
individual, you should develop a study plan to suit yourself. You 
do not have to follow the suggested way of studying if it does 
not serve you. See Chapter 2 for more advice.

Get to grips with the technology. 
Familiarise yourself with all 
the technical requirements. You don’t have to know everything. 
You don’t know everything about your word processor, after all. 
But get to grips with the basics as it will improve your positive 
feelings about the technology. Those feelings are linked to effec-
tiveness. See Chapter 2 for more advice.

Form a social group.
Meet up with people regularly. Even if you 
think there is nothing to discuss, a coffee and a chat will help trig-
ger ideas. This will also help with your motivation. See Chapter 
5 for more advice.

Set up routines to check communications. 
There are so many 
communications systems available it is diffcult to keep up. If you 
establish a habit of checking all possible sources for messages
you won’t miss out. See Chapter 11 for more details. 

