Preparing for 
online study 
Studying online provides you with great fexibility, as discussed in 
Chapter 1. However, that fexibility can also pose you with ques-
tions that you haven’t needed to answer before. If you have studied 
traditionally at a university, you do not have to decide where and 
how you will learn. Te university itself has made several decisions 
in advance, forcing you to study in a particular way. Tis was clear 
when I helped my son move into his accommodation at the Fal-
lowfeld Campus when he started at the University of Manchester 
in 2018. Te room had a study bench that went across the width 
of the bedroom in front of the window. Tere were bookshelves 
on one side of this desk arrangement. On the other side was a pin-
board. Tere was a desk lamp and a chair. Everything was in place 
for my son to just sit down and get on with his studies. As I drove 
the 200 miles home after waving him of onto his new adventure, 
I realised how little had changed since I went to university. When 
I arrived at the Cathedral Court accommodation at the University 
of Surrey, my room had a desk with bookshelves above and a pin-
board to the side. I was also given a chair and table lamp. Research 
conducted at Moscow State University (Popov, 2018) showed that 
student accommodation has been pretty much the same since the 
ninth century – though lights wouldn’t have been electric back
