Parlance 
− a style or manner of speaking or writing. 
Periphrasis 
− renaming of an object by a phrase that emphasises some 
particular feature of the object. Periphrasis is in a way related to metonymy. 
It is a description of an object instead of its name.
e. g.:
«Delia was studying under Rosenstock — you know his repute as a 
disturber of the piano kevs» 
(instead of «a pianist»). 
Personage 
− a character in a play or book, or in history. 
Personification 
− the attribution of personal nature or character to 
inanimate objects or abstract notions. is a particular case of metaphor. It 
consists in attributing life and mind to inanimate things. Besides the actual 
objects of Nature abstractions of the mind, such as life, death, truth, wisdom, 
love, evil, hope, etc. are frequently personified.
e.g. «How soon hath Time, the subtle thief of youth,
Stolen on his wing my three and twentieth year I»

Polysyndeton 
− the use of a number of conjunctions in close succession.
 
Polysyndeton is a stylistic significance is inherent in the intentional 
recurrence of form-words, for the most part conjunctions. The repetition of 
the conjunction 
and 
underlines close connection of the successive 
statements. 
e. g.: 
«
If
 
(the tent) is soaked and heavy, and it flogs about, and tumbles 
down on you, and clings round your head, and makes you mad» (Jerome)
Prolepsis 
is repetition of the noun subject in the form of a personal pronoun. 
The stylistic purpose of this device is to emphasize the subject, to make it 
more conspicuous.
e. g.: 
«Miss Tillie Webster, she slept forty days and nights without waking 
up» (O'Henry).
