Set expression (a phraseological unit)
− a more or less stable word 
combination of the vocabulary of a given language, having a wholeness of 
meaning which may not conform to the meaning of component parts:
e.g. 
There is no use crying over spilt milk. 
 
Simile 
− a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly 
compared by the use of 
like, as, resemble, etc.
It is an explicit statement 
concerning the similarity, the affinity of two different notions.
e. g.: 
«That fellow 
(first object) 
is LIKE an old fox 
(second object)». 
Solemn 
− arousing feelings of awe, very impressive. 
Social variations
− testify to the speaker's family, education, social status 
background: 
upper class and non-upper class, a political activist, a member 
of the proletariat, a
Times 
reader, etc.

− a group of lines in a repeating pattern forming a division of a 
poem. 
Stylistic inversion

any kind of deviation from the usual order of words in 
the sentence is called inversion. Stylistic inversion is placing a part of the 
sentence into a position unusual for it for the purpose of emphasis.
e. g. :
«They slid down
» — 
«Down they slid». 
Stylistic lexicology 
studies the semantic structure of the word and the 
interrelation (or interplay) of the connotative and denotative meanings of the 
word, as well as the interrelation of the stylistic connotations of the word and 
the context.
