Holmes! (book and lyrics by Brett Nicholson, music by Hans
Vollrath). It premiered at the Disney Institute, Florida, on 23
September 1997 and has had several workshop performances
since, including a benefit concert for the Civic Theatres of
Central Florida.
Robert Warwick – Appeared in the ninth American produc-
tion of the 1899 Sherlock Holmes stage play at the Cosmopolitan
Theater, New York, premiering on 20 February 1928. (See

Fritz Weaver – American stage actor who starred in the
successful 1965 musical Baker Street (book by Jerome
Coopersmith, music and lyrics by Marian Grudeff and
Raymond Jessell, directed by Harold Prince). It premiered on
16 February at the Broadway Theater, New York and ran for
313 performances.
John Webb – In December 1893, the same time that Holmes
met his ‘death’ at the Reichenbach Falls, the five-act play
Sherlock Holmes, Private Detective received its copyright perform-
ance at the Theatre Royal, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, with Webb
in the main role. As Sherlock Holmes:A Psychological Drama in Five
Acts, it began touring on 28 May 1894 at the Theatre Royal,
Glasgow, and continued until at least April 1902. Charles
Rogers was the dramatist, and it was quite strong stuff for its
time. Henry S Dacre took over at some point in the run.
Orson Welles – Charismatic character actor who directed
and starred in a radio production of Gillette’s stage play
Sherlock Holmes on 25 September 1938 as part of the Mercury
Theatre On The Air series for American station WABC-CS. He
later played Moriarty on radio opposite John Gielgud.
Alan Wheatley – Debonair British actor who first appeared
as Holmes in a high-profile six-part series for the BBC (20
October to 1 December 1951), scripted by Observer film critic
