Hermann Speelmans – German-born actor who played a
chubby-faced criminal called Jimmy Ward (Sherlock Holmes in
disguise) in Sherlock Holmes: The Grey Lady (1937, Neue Film
KG).
Brent Spiner – Impersonated Holmes for an episode of Star
Trek:The Next Generation called Elementary, Dear Data (first trans-
mitted in America on 12 May 1988).
John Stanley – Took over for two further American radio
series of Sherlock Holmes after Tom Conway left. A total of 76
stories were transmitted on WOR-MBS from 28 September
1947 to 6 June 1949.
Herbert Stanton – Starred in the UK provincial tour of
Doyle’s play The Speckled Band from December 1914.
H Hamilton Stewart – Appeared in his own touring
company’s production of William Gillette’s play Sherlock
Holmes from August 1906 to December 1917 in the UK.
Robert Stephens – English classical actor and assistant
director of the National Theatre chosen by Billy Wilder to star
in  The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (United Artists/
Phalanx/Mirisch/Sir Nigel Films) in 1970. Holmes was
portrayed as a real person rather than the caricature he had

become, but the intense emotional drain nearly killed
Stephens. Christopher Lee played Mycroft Holmes. The
$10m three-hour film was pruned back to two prior to its
release, but proved a box-office disappointment despite its
