Gizatov (2015) sharply criticized journalistic education in Kazakhstan. He points 
out the lack of criteria for the recruitment of journalism departments. "On the one hand, 
there are many failed philologists who have never written a single article for the media

at the same time, and their scientific claims are very modest. On the other hand, the 
department is practically strengthened by ex-journalists who have become unnecessary 
in their media and are so miserable in the university audience" (Gizdatov, 2015, p. 6). 
He also noted that over the years of the existence of the faculties of journalism, not a 
single worthy Kazakhstani textbook on journalism had been published. If in Soviet 
universities there was a weak theory, but healthy practice, then in Kazakhstan there is 
neither one nor the other. Igor Bratsev, in 2018 noted that "Kazakh media is increasingly 
becoming just a rebroadcaster of news generated by the state sector, which does not 
stimulate critical thinking within the public. The news has become nothing more than 
obvious propaganda" (Media Sustainability Index, 2019). Additionally, the specialty 
"journalism" is taught in nineteen universities in ten cities of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

However, Gizatov highlighted that "UNESCO Journalism Curriculum Model", was 
a good example, which Gizatov provided. The UNESCO Journalism Curriculum Model 
equipped students with fundamental knowledge about "Fundamentals of Journalism" 
and "Advanced Journalism" as well as practical skills such as "Writing Skills" and 
"Simple News and Entertaining Articles". These courses compensated the low quality 
of the programs of most of the nineteen universities, teaching Journalism in Kazakhstan. 
Brown and Ibrayeva (2019) reviewed the foundation for the journalism profession 
in Kazakhstan and the motives of studying journalism by Kazakhstani students. The 
authors have conducted a thorough investigation of what motivated students at 
different periods of the country's development and what motivates them the most 
nowadays. It was revealed that in the 1960s, journalistic education was considered a 
building block for a career in writing which was a prevalent occupation at that time 
(Brown & Ibrayeva, 2019). Now students have a clear idea of the various fields of 
journalism and in which they would like to work. The primary mass medium that 
journalism students prefer is TV, but a high percentage of students prefer to work 
online. Besides, they investigated which role gender plays in the choice of profession.
