PROPHYLAXIS OF RECURRENT VOLVULUS OF THE 
SIGMOID COLON AND POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS

Actuality: One of the heavy states in the concept of “acute 
abdomen” is a sigmoid volvulus, in which the mortality rate from 20 to 
60-75 % without a noticeable downward trend, as well as the number of 
septic complications up to 80 %.
Aim: To improve the outcome of treatment of recurrent sigmoid 
colon twists and minimizes postoperative complications as well.
Materials and Methods: Between 2006 and 2018 in Namangan 
Branch of the Republican Research Centre of Emergency Medicine (the 
next time Namangan branch RRCEM) was cured in 156 patients with 
sigmoid volvulus. Male patients were 99 (63.6%) and 57 were female 
(36.4%). The age of patients was from 15 to 89 years old and 15 to 19 
years old patients were 17 (11%). In order 20 to 44 years old patients 
were 78 (50 %) also patients from 45 to 59 years old were 37 (24%) and 
also aged from 60 to 89 years old patients were 24 (15%). A characteristic 
is the late appeal of hospital in 112 (89%) patients. They were admitted 
to Namangan branch RRCEM more than 24 hours from the onset of the 
disease and also two patients hospitalized after 16 days. 
83 (53 %) patients suffered a history of palliative surgery 32 % 
patients were operated a time, twice operated in 15% patients and 3 more 
surgeries in 11 % patients. 38% patients were experienced sigmoid-
meso-application methods by Hagen – Thorn. 
In 7 cases have been operation for excision of adhesions detorsion 
of the sigmoid colon without sigmoid-meso-application. During the first 
year after undergoing surgery relapse of the sigmoid volvulus were found 
in 43 (28 %) patients. 
Results: After a management and of the patient’s detorsy sigmoid 
colon and methods by Hagen - Thorn operation was performed in 114 
(73 %) patients, and simple excision detorsion abdominal adhesions 
in 5 (3%) patients. Sigmoid colon resection with anastomosis “end to 
end” was done operation in 37 (24 %) patients. All patients produced 
retrograde intubation colon through the anus, which allowed reducing 
stool and gas from the colon. The function of the endotracheal tube was

maintained for the first three days. One patient aged 85 years with a 
history which underwent palliative surgery triple-detorsy sigmoid-meso-
application operation was performed with one-stage resection of the 
sigmoid colon with colon anastomosis “end to end”. During the period 
of postoperative time there was complicated by bilateral pneumonia and 
heart rhythm disorders with symptoms of angina. Postoperative surgical 
wound suppuration occurred in 12 (7.5%) patients. Anastomosis suture 
failure occurred in 2 (1.5%) patients in which resection anastomosis
