stay
(stay, stayed, stayed)
To stay somewhere means to be somewhere for a considerable time.
stay ahead
In any race, the person, horse or car in front of the others, is ahead.
If you stay ahead, it means that you are
ahead
in the race, and that you
continue to be ahead.
Keep ahead
means exactly the same.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
stay off
Off
is the opposite of on, or it can be a move away from an on position.
'STAY OFF THE GRASS'
You might see this sign in a park. You are not on the grass, but don't go
on it. Continue not to be on the grass.
'Keep off the grass'
means exactly the same.
Inseparable two-word verb
No problem.
stay out, stay out of
There is a sign at an electricity switching room.
'Danger of death. STAY OUT'
It means do not go in. You are
out
of the room, and you must continue to
be out of the room.
Keep out
means exactly the same.
STAY OUT is a two
-word verb without an object
No problem.
STAY OUT OF is a
three-word verb


stay up
'Don't stay up for me, Mum. I won't be back till two.'
'Two in the morning? You're right. That's far too late for me to stay up. I
need my sleep.'
Stay up late is what we do when we don't want to - or can't - go to bed.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
step
(step, stepped, stepped)
The horizontal parts of a staircase. You take a step on each step when
you go up or down.
step down
When you step down, you take a step
down
. If you are in a high position,
and you are caught 'borrowing' public money (depending in which country
you are) you may have to step down. You might have to leave your job.
One day in the 1970s a British Prime Minister suddenly stepped down.
We, the public, never
found out
why.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
step up to
This is
up
to the limit. When you step up to the mark, you step so that
your foot is exactly on the mark at the beginning of a race. You are ready
to run, ready to compete, ready to win. You step up to the challenge, to
the responsibility.
Three-word verb
No problem.
stick
(stick, stuck, stuck)
When two things come together and it is hard to separate them again, we
say that they have stuck together. In the old days people stuck stamps to
letters. When you drop your favourite ceramic teapot on the floor and it
breaks into pieces, you can stick it together again.
