It was an ordinary math class when abis, senior students of the school, interrupted the lesson. They said “We’re looking for the brightest students to compete in national and international math Olympiads. Are there any volunteers?”. He rose his hand, without even thinking. How he would have known that it would change his view of life forever? He became 1 of 10 candidates, from which only 2 would be chosen. Abis started to tutor them in the olympic center, as they once were tutored by their own seniors. This changed the boy’s life from playing video games all day to getting lost in the amazing world of combinatorics. His new passion was critical thinking. The olympic center became his second home and the abis became his second family. And of course, the boy was chosen as the first of two students to compete in Olympiads.
The wind, the cold weather, and the voice of other students chatting failed to grab attention of the boy. He was waiting among all the other students for the announcement of results of his first ever Olympiad, the district stage of national math Olympiads. He felt like his heart was trying to come out of his mouth. The long awaited moment eventually came. The results were announced. The boy looked at them, then looked again, and again... The moment he really made sure that he got the 1st place, he started to run towards his abis. He hugged them for a while and didn’t even notice that tears were coming out of his eyes. His hard work paid off and many other achievements continued to come along within following years...
The boy had no idea how his life was about to change. He had the biggest shock when he learned that the principal, who were fighting against diabetes, had passed away. The sad truth of life reminded itself again. But what could anyone do? Death was also a part of life. It didn’t take much time for a new principal to be appointed to the school. Second shock hit the boy harder than the last: new principal decided to close the olympic center and he did. Brightest students started to leave. Abis had already graduated before the olympic center closed. Both his family and his home was taken away from the boy. Inevitably, the school fell very behind academically amongst other schools. His parents decided to assign the boy to another school. But was it right to leave when your school was going through its hardest times? The boy neither had a choice nor anything he could do.
He became astonished by the accuracy of the quote “Work as hard as you can and pray to God for the rest” when he learned that the principal of his former school resigned and the new principal decided to open an even bigger olympic center. But they were missing abis to tutor and guide the students. The boy immediately moved back to his school. He was aware that it was his turn to be abi.
He had no time to waste. As in the old days, he started to leave the school last, but this time with his students next to him. He followed every step of his abis because he was aware of the responsibility, which was upon him.
Months passed as they were days. In about 2 hours, results of the International Math Challenge, very first Olympiad of his students, would be announced. The boy felt the same excitement as he felt in his own very first Olympiad. They were holding their breath when the results were announced. His students won 4 honorable mentions, 3 bronzes, 3 silvers, and a gold. They hugged him and he hugged them. Again tears were coming out of his eyes. That moment he really felt what being an abi really meant. Hard work paid off once more.
