Sometimes in the theatre the star is ill. But the show must go on, so
somebody else has to stand in the show
for
the star. She is the
substitute. She stands in for the star. In fact, she is known as the stand-
in.
Three-word verb

stand out
Something or someone who stands out is easy to see, easy to
pick out
.
Usually, with a person, we use this verb to mean that the person we are
talking about stands
out
(from the crowd) because of excellence. (In fact
'outstanding' means 'truly excellent'.)
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
stand up to
You are not on your knees, you are standing
up
When you stand up to somebody, you have courage, you are not running
away. You are standing and facing the enemy.
Three-word verb

start
(start, started, started)
To begin (begin, began, begun). When you start a project it is the very
first thing you do in that project. If your project is to run a marathon, then
you start by running ten metres. If you can do that, do another ten. And so
on.
start out
Similar to
set out
in the sense of beginning a journey, but we usually mean
on life's journey. We say this when we talk of a young man or woman,
leaving school or home, setting
out
for the first time. They are starting out.

Up
can mean imagination and the courage to do something new. Even in
hard times, there are always people who want to start up a business.
Silicon Valley is full of start-ups. These are companies that famously
started up in a garage.
