sort
(sort, sorted, sorted)
To classify, which is something all people do all the time.
sort out
Out
here is the end, the result. When you have sorted something out, you
have finished the sorting, the problem is solved, and the annoyance has
gone. Obviously we sort the good from the bad, the delicious from the
poisonous, and so on. But the feeling of getting rid of something annoying
means that we can say 'sort out' when no sorting has happened.
'Martha, didn't you tell me you had rats in your barn?'
'Yep, but the dog sorted them out.'
There are no more rats. The problem has gone. Good dog.
