GLOSSARY
Uniformed services employee
Person in the front office department who provides person-
alized services to guests. Positions include bell staff (porters), door and parking atten-
dants, van drivers, and in some hotels, concierge personnel.
Unique cancellation number
Number or series of numbers and letters used to identify the
cancellation of a single reservation. A unique cancellation number is used only one time to
identify the cancellation of only one reservation.
Universal process of management
Concept that, at the most basic level, the principles of
planning, organizing, coordinating, staffing, controlling, and evaluating are the same (or
similar) in any type of business or organization.
Upgrade
To assign a guest to a more expensive (or desirable) room type than the room
type to which the guest was originally assigned.
