Interfaced information systems have numerous advantages. In many cases,
however, a specific PMS may not be capable of interfacing with all other
information-generating subsystems in the hotel. Therefore, FOMs must
ensure that a PMS can be interfaced with all of the hotel’s critical, preexist-
ing, information-generating systems. When a PMS is selected for a new hotel,
it will dictate the choices available when selecting other information-generat-
ing subsystems. Clearly, the best PMS is one that can interface with the hotel
industry’s best and most popular ancillary hardware and software products.

Maintenance requirements. Like any other item of hotel equipment, the PMS must
be properly maintained to operate efficiently. The cost of effective preventive
maintenance programs for each PMS will vary. The FOM must determine and
understand the time and money required to minimize downtime and to maximize
system efficiencies by providing routine, ongoing cleaning and maintenance.
